From the Bridge.
February has seen many of our younger sailors continue to be very active and represent themselves and the club at different regattas. It is wonderful to see and hear about their experiences and see the results they have achieved, whether they finished first or achieved a best result. With many entering regattas for the first time the Club has reason to celebrate. No doubt the junior coaching program is influential in this. It is gratifying to see that the numbers at the coaching sessions continue to build - 18 last weekend. We are fortunate to have committed coaches who deliver a first class program. Of course none of this would happen without the support of the parents.
A re-accreditation day for Instructors was held recently for Colin Franke, Roger Crabtree, Trevor Wilcox (Merricks YC) and accreditation for Will Palmer, with all being successful. We are fortunate to now have four qualified Instructors (Marg Douglas) along with a number of Assistant Instructors who can run Sailing Courses.
The club hosted another Schools Teams event last Saturday. This was an ideal opportunity to showcase the fantastic sailing area we have as well as the club itself. It was the second time we have hosted the event this season and we are the only club on Westernport Bay to do so. Thank you to those members who helped run this event and provided on land support, especially at short notice.
The Club also has a number of schools using the facilities as part of a sailing camp experience from now till the end of term. The Pacers continue to prove themselves an ideal training boat for these groups. The offering of these camps relies heavily on volunteers from the club to operate the rescue boats. Lyn Dugay and Russell Jones in particular are to be thanked for the continuing support of the program. If any other member has some spare time during the week and is able to drive a rescue boat, Marg Douglas or myself would be delighted to hear from you.
The next big event for some of our sailors will be the State Championships. The club is delighted to be hosting the Impulse Association Championships over the Labour Day Long Weekend. If any member is available that weekend to help I am sure Andrew Hill (sailing related) or Adam Smith (social) would like to hear from you. There are a range of jobs to be filled, both on and off water. As the saying goes- the more the merrier.
Barry Greer and myself are looking forward to seeing pictures of any "whopping" fish caught by a club member. It is always great to hear about and see what has been caught by our members as they enjoy some time out on the bay. Please send details and a picture to Barry so we can incorporate them in future newsletters.
May you enjoy fair winds and sunny days.
