Alexander Jurovic has represented WYC in a number of regattas this season. This is his summary of that experience.
Sail Melbourne
Late last year I sailed in Sail Melbourne at Sandringham Yacht Club. It was a tough regatta as it was very windy most days. I had a very bad regatta finishing 19th out of 20 laser 4.7’s. My best results were in races 2 and 6 where I managed to get 14th for both races. I did very badly on one day because there was very light wind. I struggled a lot on that day finishing races 4 and 5 with a DNF and a 20th. In the end it was all about learning and improving for the weeks leading up to Nationals down in Hobart.
Laser Nationals - Hobart
At the end of December I travelled to Hobart to compete in the Laser Nationals in the 4.7. I had a good regatta finishing 23rd out of 40 4.7’s. My best result was a 12th in race 2,
Results in order of race- 1.22nd, 2. 12th, 3.27th, 4. 25th, 5.27th, 6. 24th, 7.24th, 8.32nd, 9.25th, 10.25th, 11. DNF due to injury.
I ended up dropping races 8 and 11. It was a very good regatta because I met some new people and finished around where I wanted to be. The wind averaged around 25 knots for the 5 days of racing. The wind was also very shifty due to Mt. Wellington. We also had some crazy downwind sailing because the waves were steep and short.
Youth Nationals - Hobart
Shortly after I finished the Laser Nationals I was back on the water at the Youth Nationals. The winds were the same as the previous week. I had a very bad regatta because I was tired from the previous week. My best results were 26th in race 1 and 23rd in race 8. I ended up finishing the regatta 37th out of 54 4.7s. At one point in this regatta I was reaching to the top mark due to a massive wind shift. The last day of racing ended quickly because we were getting gusts up to 37 knots and it was chaotic with boats everywhere. The waves were bigger than the previous week making downwind much harder.
