I began sailing when Heather and I bought a Mirror dingy in 1972. We taught ourselves to sail. We joined McCrae Yacht Club in 1973 and over two years gradually improved until we began to win a number of races. In 1975 we bought a Signet, a12.6 foot flat-bottomed mono hull. Over the next 3 years Heather and I won our division as well as the Victorian title and then with a new crew I won it a further two times. I then bought a Paper Tiger, built new hulls and sailed that for a further three years.
After moving from Mornington to Eltham and with changing family commitments I took a break from sailing.
In 2000 Heather and I looked for and bought a trailer sailor, an Ultimate 18, from Trevor Wilcox at Merricks. We had also purchased a house at Somers, so looked at the local yacht clubs to work out which would suit our needs. Westernport was it with a number of other trailer sailors in the yard, a good launch ramp and friendly people.
As a teacher I became involved with the sail training in the last few years and qualified as an Instructor in 2009. Since then I have taught Tackers, Sail School camps and the Year Four Introduction to Tackers program.
We currently have an Ultimate 23, which we sail with the Ultimate Yacht Association. I currently serve on that committee as well.
