NNZ Weekly Update 6 November 2015

MESSAGE FROM NETBALL NEW ZEALAND CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Greetings everyone,

What a week, that began with the Silver Ferns stunning win in Perth, Wai’s last match, and the retirement of Jodi Brown.  I am so pleased for Wai and the team to have had such a comprehensive win against Australia, and it was serendipity for Jodi to be awarded player of the match in her last game, that was so deserved as she had a stunner.

This was followed by the final ANZ futureFERNS Festival Day, held in Hawkes Bay over the weekend and concluded a series of five festival days that were delivered throughout the country – Invercargill, Christchurch, Hawkes Bay, Hamilton and Waitakere.  These festival days have been heralded a great success with children, parents/caregivers and staff thoroughly enjoying the day.  The ANZ futureFERNS Festival Day were developed to provide children with the opportunity to try Netball, meet some of their local Netball heroes and celebrate Netball, in particular the roll out of ANZ futureFERNS, Netball New Zealand’s official junior Netball programme.  Based on the success of the 2015 ANZ futureFERNS Festival Days, planning has commenced for the 2016 series which will be held preseason at five new Netball Centres throughout the country.

I am very pleased with the appointment of Janine Southby as our new Head Coach of the Silver Ferns. Janine is only the 10th Silver Ferns coach since 1938 and we look forward to welcoming her into the role on 1 December.

Today, I am loading up my Fitbit, having agreed to take part in the Diabetes NZ Fitbit Movement Challenge, a four week competition as part of Diabetes Action Month. This competitive challenge will help raise awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle to help reduce the risk of diabetes.  My week of competition starts on Monday, with the aim of reaching 10,000 steps per day, and I am in a pool competing against a diverse group of New Zealanders.  Check out
diabetes.org.nz.

It will be great to have a weekend at home, be it with children who are in the middle of exams, and enjoy the company of my husband who is “back” (both physically and mentally) from the Rugby World Cup and in need of some quiet time for recovery (very exhausting and stressful being a fan!).

Kind regards,
Hilary
