Heat Reward Local Support

Young footballers and local clubs in Far North Queensland are the big winners from the FNQ FC Heat's highly praised football clinics.

The NPL Queensland club this week donated $670 raised from clinics held in 2013, to several Far North Queensland clubs.

Former A-League midfielder Alex Smith, who is the Heat’s star signing for the 2014 season, presented the cheque to FNQ Football General Manager, Duncan Sims.

"This is a fantastic initiative by the club," Smith, who had stints with Gold Coast United and Wellington Phoenix in the national top tier, told FNQ FC Media.

"I know some clubs struggle financially, so to be able to help them out like this is great."

The money comes from the newly created 'Community Club Cashback' fund – a part of the Heat's football clinics.

Around one hundred kids, from ages three to 15, attended the specialist coaching programs this year; each child's guardian nominated a local club they wished to receive a percentage of their registration fee.

The cheque donated today is the first of many as the clinics' popularity continues to grow.

"I've heard so many positive things about the Heat football clinics and seen so many juniors enjoying themselves while getting fit and learning advanced football tips," Smith said.

"The fact that the clinics are also helping the clubs as well as the kids – well, that's just a win-win all round."

The Community Club Cashback fund is just one of the many ways FNQ FC is helping local football and the community at large.

Expert tuition in the Heat's Academy program helped 16 Heat players be selected to represent Queensland and two selected for the Queensland Academy of Sport.

Five of the club's National Premier League players trialled with A-League clubs and two former players recently captained the Australian U17 side.

FNQ FC's extensive work helping local charitable organisations was one of the main reasons it won Team of the Year at the recent Football Federation Australia Awards.
