Fire Kickin' In For Finn

Sunshine Coast FC Fire united with other elite sporting clubs at the weekend to raise money for Pacific Paradise toddler Finn Smith who has been fighting for his life in Brisbane Royal Children’s Hospital.

Eighteen-month-old Finn was diagnosed with meningococcal three weeks ago. He has been treated in hospital and last week underwent exploratory surgery to determine the extent of amputations he would need. The surgery found Finn would need amputation of the fingers on his left hand, his entire right hand and his left leg below the knee.

The Fire, along with Queensland Rugby Union, the Sea Eagles Rugby League and Sunshine Coast Council, hosted “Kickin’ in 4 Finn” on Saturday, December 14 – a family sporting fun day to raise funds for Finn’s family.

“The story of little Finn has caught the attention of the community, and the whole region has rallied together to assist his family,” Fire Technical Director Kevin A’herne-Evans said.

“We wanted to support the cause in any way we could and it was great for our coaches to be involved and fantastic to see so many of our NPL and Academy players participating on the day.”

The Fire coaching staff and senior players hosted fun coaching sessions and games, including a mini-World Cup competition in the blow-up field.  More than 100 Fire players attended and made donations.

Their efforts raised more than $5000, all of which will go directly to Finn’s family.

Finn will remain in recovery for a further three months before he undergoes more surgery.
