Young Jet Relishing Senior Chances

Sixteen-year-old Moreton Bay United talent Sam Dickinson has grasped his first taste of NPL senior football with both hands – and has no intention of letting go.

The teenager said he was “surprised” to get his debut for the title-chasing Jets in the 3-1 win at Western Pride earlier this month but has justified the faith of coach Terry Kirkham by playing in the last four Jets fixtures.

Playing in the ‘number 10’ role, Dickinson was involved in Royce Brownlie’s opening goal against Pride and took the free kick which Charles Mendy headed in just after half-time.

He strengthened his reputation for quality delivery with a long through ball for Mendy on his way to one of four goals in a 5-3 victory at Brisbane Roar.

“I was told I was going to play at youth (level) and that I’d train with the first team, but it was still a surprise to be told I was playing (at Western Pride),’’ said Dickinson.

“Playing for the seniors was certainly different. I hope I can get used to the pace of it. I am quite critical of myself, but sometimes you’ve got to be.”

Selecting Dickinson is part of coach Terry Kirkham’s long-term plans and emphasis on youth development within the NPL pathway.

“The experience this season will set him up for next year,” said Kirkham. “He’s finding out about the tempo and sharpness needed at this level. It’s very different to the Under 18s.”

Dickinson, who has been with Jets and Albany Creek Excelsior (ACE) since Under 11s, is also setting himself new targets.

“I definitely want to improve on my first performances,” he said, “hopefully I’ll be better in training each week and if I’m lucky play at the weekend.”

Dickinson is the latest in a series of younger Jets’ players promoted to the senior squad this season.

Youth team players Jack Baresic and Doug Brown have become familiar names, while Chom Arop, James Honey, Daniel Turner and Gabriel Durand have also tasted first team football.

Recent recruit Josh Sansucie, who joined Jets from Sunshine Coast Fire, also made his senior debut for the club against FNQ Heat in Cairns last Saturday night.
