Kirkham: Fire Are Favourites

Moreton Bay United Jets coach Terry Kirkham says his team are underdogs for Saturday night’s blockbuster clash with Sunshine Coast Fire at Wolter Park.

Despite being the league’s top scoring team, and remaining one of only two undefeated sides in the competition, Kirkham believes Fire’s recent form may just give them the edge.

The Jets coach watched his opponent’s 2-0 victory over Brisbane Roar NYL last weekend – which lifted them to third in the league standings.

Kirkham said he was impressed by Fire’s performance and that the clash loomed as important for both sides.

“They did a fantastic job shutting the Roar down and will be full of confidence having won three on the trot,” said Kirkham.

Jets scheduled fixture against fellow high-fliers Redlands United was washed-out last weekend, but Kirkham said the week-off had fitted well with Jets’ training schedule and that his squad is ready for the Fire game.

“The winner could finish the weekend on top of the table or in the top two, so it’s a big game for us.”

“I’m really excited about being involved with this playing group. The boys have been fantastic,” Kirkham added.

Kirkham does not anticipate he will be making any chances to his match-day squad this weekend.

Jets currently sit in fourth place on the NPL table, with captain Royce Brownlie leading the Golden Boot chart with seven goals so far this season.

The senior men’s match will serve as the main fixture in a double header with local community club Albany Creek Excelsior, who play in the Brisbane Premier League prior to the Jets.

This weekend will also prove a big test for Jet’s youth and junior divisions in a full range of fixtures against Fire.

Jet’s Youth Men’s and Under 18’s sides are both currently placed second in their divisions behind QAS and Olympic FC respectively.

The club’s younger sides are also progressing well with a series of impressive performances in the junior boys and girls divisions.
