Heat Sign American Shotstopper

Aquis FNQ Heat have welcomed an exciting addition to its National Premier Leagues Queensland squad on the eve of its second home match of the season.

Former American College star goalkeeper, Daniel Valicicak has signed with the club and is set to make his NPL debut on Saturday, named on the bench ahead of the clash with Redlands United at Barlow Park.

Valicicak is one of St Francis University's most successful players, having been named in the 2013 NSCAA 2nd team All Region team as well as the 2013 1st team NEC All Conference side.

He captained the college side in his final year in 2013, has since graduated and moved to Australia looking to pursue a career in personal fitness.

Heat Head Coach Peter Tokesi says Valicicak will add extra competition in the Heat's goalkeeping ranks and ensure current first choice custodian Kevin Ward remains on his toes.

"Daniel's got quite a bit of experience and great athleticism," Tokesi said.

"I think it'll be great for Kev to have that competition there; I think we'll see considerable improvement out of him now Daniel's here."

Valicicak is part of a five man bench where he'll be joined by fellow American Alex Smith, who returns to the side after missing last week's solid 6-0 win against South West Queensland Thunder.

Tokesi's named the same starting line-up that tore apart Thunder, hoping for a second-straight win.

"We played a lot better last week; our ball retention was a lot better albeit against weaker opposition," Tokesi explained.

"I still want to see a lot more determination from the guys, particularly in defence which I think has been lacking in recent weeks."

"Redlands are a great side, they're in second place for good reason and they'll give us a good test on Saturday."

The match kicks-off at 7:30pm at Barlow Park - Heat Academy teams are in action from midday.

Tickets are $10, kids under 14 years-old have free entry.
