Six Goal City Go Top

Brisbane City rocketed to the top of the NPL Queensland table on Sunday afternoon after defeating South West Queensland Thunder 6-0 at Clive Berghofer Stadium in Toowoomba.

City captain Matt Biggins and striker Jarrod Kyle both recorded braces for the visitors, who raced to a 5-0 lead to seal their third straight win by half-time.

Biggins opened accounts in only the sixth minute of the contest when he beat Thunder goalkeeper Jace Hudson at the near post.

Young-Jae Joo produced a wonder strike in the 17th minute, firing home from 30 yards to double the visitors' advantage.

Kyle added his name to the score sheet nearing the half hour by pouncing on a defensive error in the Thunder backline before drilling a shot to the right of Hudson.

Thunder sought to fight their way back into the match, but were caught on the counter attack on 36 minutes, Sharov breaking free and cooly slotting his shot for a unassailable four goal lead.

As half time approached,  Thunder again pushed forward and were once again caught on the counter attack – Kyle netting his second after dribbling around Hudson.

The second half proved a more even affair, with the only goal coming with just over 20 minuets remaining in the contest.

Biggins rounded out his performance with a tidy finish following good combination play from Kyle and Sharov in the build-up.

The result lifts City to the top of the NPL Queensland table on goal difference ahead of Redlands United, confirming last year’s Grand Finalists as genuine title contenders.

Thunder remain mired at the foot of the table without a competition point, after their opening round win against CQFC Energy was wiped following the withdrawal of the club last week.
