Sharks Stay Top With Win

The Palm Beach Sharks continued their perfect start to the 2014 NPL Queensland season on Saturday at Mallawa Complex after accounting for CQFC Energy 4-0.

Jonathon Camilleri did the damage with a goal in each half for the hosts, with Daniel Dragicevic and Justyn Mackay also etching their names on the scoresheet.

As they did last weekend, Sharks took the game to their opponents from the outset – Chris Lucas denied in only the third minute by Energy shot-stopper Andrew Poyser.

A minute later a defensive error on the left hand side saw the ball turned over cheaply and quickly crossed in for a simple tap in for Jonathon Camillerri to open the scoring for the Sharks.

Both teams started to find their feet and Palm Beach continued to cause headaches for the CQFC defence.

It wasn't until the 11th minute of the game that CQFC could challenge the Sharks keeper but Jordan Polkinghorne’s shot was deflected over the bar.

Both teams exchanged attacks in the open contest, with Sharks unlucky not to go further ahead courtesy of a through ball from Camelleri to Lucas, who was unable to beat Poyser from 15 yards.

Daniel Dragicevic doubled the host’s advantage prior to the half time break when he pounced on an errant back pass from the Energy defence.

A flurry of chances opened the second half, before Camilleri secured his brace in the 54th minute after Poyser spilled a free kick into the Sharks player’s path.

The Sharks midfield continued to create plenty in the attacking third, with Rhys Lambert and Chris Lucas spurning two half chances apiece around the hour mark.

With blood in the water, Sharks captain Justyn Mackay sealed the result on 66 minutes with a stinging strike from the top of the penalty area.

To their credit, Energy managed to fashion chances in the latter stages of the match but it was too little too late for the visitors.

Sharks sit atop the NPL Queensland ladder after two rounds on goal difference and are the only team not to concede a goal so far this season.
