Strikers Look To Scuttle US Naval Select
NPL Queensland club Brisbane Strikers will host a friendly match against a select side from docking US Navy vessel USS George Washington next Monday night at Perry Park.
A sizeable crowd of visiting service personnel is expected for the fixture, and Strikers are responding by offering free entry to all local football fans for the intriguing international match-up.
The friendly will be a crucial hit-out as the Strikers squad embarks on a busy close to their NPL Queensland campaign. The club is scheduled to play six competitive fixtures in the next month as they seek to qualify for the top four finals series.
The friendly against USS George Washington is not Strikers first dalliance with Americana this year – the club recently adding US college product Kyle Luetkehans to their senior squad for the remainder of the NPL season.
USS George Washington is a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the largest class of warship ever built, and houses a crew of more than 6000 personnel.
The ship’s co-ed soccer team placed first earlier this year at the MWR Captain’s Cup Tournament in Yokosuka, Japan – the ship’s home port.
Strikers are a fixture in the top half of the NPL Queensland table in the competition’s inaugural season. They currently sit in fifth position.
Gates open at Perry Park from 6:00PM, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30PM. Entry is free.
