Under 8 Yellow by Craig Love (Coach)
Today we played East Ringwood White at Quambee Reserve in freezing conditions where we arrived to see the ground covered in Ice! The boys had some great passages of play, particularly linking up with consecutive handballs and then finding Mitcham targets up forward. Billy and Haydn kicked some nice goals on the run and shared the ball on many occasions. Cooper was strong all over the field and racked up a lot of possessions. Thank you to Zac Molinaro and Thomas Mitchell for helping out from our Mitcham Black team and well done to Billy Love for helping out the Mitcham Black team later in the day. Players of the week: Preston, Haydn and Billy Well done to Cooper Doherty for being awarded the East Ringwood Opposition Player of the week medal. Well done Tigers!
Best Players: Cooper, Billy, Preston, Haydn and Darcy

Boy oh boy, wow wee, what a great game from the boys today. With illness and injuries we were down to 9 players and thanks to Billy Love (from u8 Yellow) we made 10. The effort shown by those 10 players was fantastic, showing great endeavour and team work. Zac C was dangerous around goals, while Jack was mopping up down back. Tom and Oscar worked hard in the ruck with some great center clearances from Zac M, Billy and Connor in the middle. Coby and Cody were floating across both the half forward and half back lines defending goals and creating plays. Dylan was listening to instructions and keeping his poison which resulted in a goal. It was also great to see Big Iggy out of his sick bed cheering the boys on!
Best: Awesome team effort
Medal winners: Dylan and Iggy
Opposition Medal winner: Billy

On what was a literally freezzzzzing morning, Mitcham U9 Yellow started a little slow. Wantirna played a great brand of football early. They got in front and were more determined to get the ball first. This showed with 3 great goals in the first term. With a few positional changes and the boys playing in their preferred positions, things clicked into place and every player on the ground did their bit. It was great to see that what was worked on at training came out in play, with great ball movement and quick disposal to mates in better positions. This hard run and great skill showed on the scored board for the rest of the game. It was very hard to select award winners this week as we had ball winners all over the ground and even had Alec Griffith kick his first goal in footy. However our Two Brothers Cafe awards this week went to to players that were hard at the ball over the ground, being front, in and under packs and taking huge 'screamers' all over the ground. Well played Thomas Woodhead and Charlie Wilson. Our Medal winner today for best player went Lorenz Horsbugh-Klinger. Lorenz has really progress this year with his skills and determination at the ball whether playing or at training. Running through 2 packs and stopping a number of attempts at goal showed how much he wanted to the ball. Well played Lorenz. All players should be very proud of how they played today. If we can keep that for the remaining 3 games the season will finish on a high note. Go Tigers!!!

A great contest this week with the boys showing what they have learned this year at training with handball, shepherding and leading. Lysterfield won the lightning carnival this year and are a very talented side. The Tigers stepped up and played their own game and took on the game creating some great play and getting some very good goals. Joel our captain led the boys well and was pivotal in defence with first year player Chris. Rishi played well in the middle and in our forward line kicking some great goals, and was our run and carry player in the middle. The Tiger Medals this week for most inspirational on ground were Chris and Rishi. Our next best players were Jett, Tarran, Billy, Morgan, Joel and Harley. The team were also congratulated by the opposition coach who commented that this was the best contest his team has seen this year.

A great day to have a late start given the frosty morning, today we took on Waverley Blues at Koonung. Again, the focus for the day was around effort and playing the role given. Our captains in Caden and Dylan started in the middle and set the tone for the rest of the team to follow. Our pressure and willingness to put our heads over the footy was tremendous. It was so good to see all the boys play their role and play with such grit and determination. The first 3 quarters was some of the best footy we have played all season, given the quality of opposition. We dominated stoppages and used the ball really well. However we let it slip in the last quarter as our defensive systems fell away and opened the door for Waverley. Heaps of positives from the day and some of the guys have set higher benchmarks for themselves which is fantastic. Amongst our best players were Daniel, Henry, Dylan, James, Jackson, Will and Caden.

Mitcham Black under 10 played Eastern Lions this week. Arriving at Walker park at 8.15 and seeing the ground covered by ice - Always a great sign. We had three captains this week, Matt one of our most committed players who always creates a contest and Paddy who has brought his exceptional basketball skills to the Tigers and Sean who displays good skills and attitude. All the captains played terrific games. The game started with the Eastern Lions getting the first goal but just as the ground thawed our boys efforts continued to improve with an immediate reply from Gabe, our full forward for the day. The game then progressed with us starting to take control across most positions in the game. Second quarter was a tight struggle. The third quarter started with two quick goals and things were definitely warming up. The last quarter saw us put the foot down with three unanswered goals. Gus ended with 3, Gabe 2 and Jesse 1. This was one of the best team orientated style of footy that the boys have played. Special thanks to my assistant coach who has been my rock this year, showing a level headed approach and sharing his experience with the boys (and the coaching team). Have a great holiday and thank you very much for all the effort you put in.

Today we played Belgrave at home, the weather was a typical winter’s day, brisk. With Bridgett being away we only had 7 girls to field and ended up borrowing 5 girls from the Belgrave team. Sometimes I wish for a full 18 players so we could show the other teams just how good the Mitcham under 10 girls are, from a team who started with no idea 11 rounds ago and were defeated easily by most teams. My little team of young ladies are a power house of effort and each week we only get better. For such a young team of players they roar like the tigers they are. Well done girls. Encouragement award went to Heidi.

Today we played Wantirna South at Wantirna South, it was a very frosty morning and good to watch the under 9’s take the field before us. Wantirna South came out very strongly getting the scoring going, the Tigers had many forward burst but were unable to put the score on the board. Trailing by just a 2 goals at ½ time the Tigers finally hit the scoreboard with a goal to Tynan, however Wantirna South continued their pressure before another goal to Tynan in the fourth term making it very tight, but Wantirna South were too good running away with the win.
Goal: Tynan (2)
Best: Hudson, Daniel, Gruff, Tynan and Ryan M
Final Score: Wantirna Sth 2.6.18 d Mitcham 2.0.12

With only 16 players due to school holidays, it was always going to be tough against Vermont especially when the opposition played with 18. They are the rules but they are unfair none-the-less. Personally I wouldn't have enjoyed the win with extra players on the ground but that’s how they roll. I am very happy to see that our Under 17’s only played with 15 on the ground when their opponents only had that number. Going down by 2 goals, my boys gave it everything once again. Pound for pound the best Mitcham junior team by far.
Best Jeremy. Xavier. James.

This week the girls played against Vermont. Missing 5 players we knew it was going to be a hard day! The game started out reasonably even however Vermont moved the ball very fast and were very efficient. Shout-out to Hannah, Meg, Lucy O, Sienna and Lauren who fought hard all day. Congratulations to Lucy O kicking our only goal for the day. I would like to mention the hard work of Caitlin, Jess and Gemma who are all first year players and have improved out of sight. Although we didn't get the result we wanted today, I believe that the girls worked hard all day and the scoreboard doesn't reflect their efforts. They were tough at the ball for the whole game and I am very proud of their efforts and improvement, in particular their shepherds which has been a struggle all season. Bad luck today girls, your all improving every week though! Keep it up. Go Tiges.

Today’s game of footy was great to get the win, but it was a numb feeling for me to see one of my players get taken off to hospital. While we all work had to get the win each week, the most important thing to me is the health, wellbeing, and enjoyment of the game for the kids. Footy can be an emotional game and I was proud of the way the boys handled themselves today, particularly in the final quarter when Luca was hurt and after the game when they shook their opponents hand after a hard fought win. What a great bunch of young men we have. Winning today has set us up for an exciting finish to the season. We currently sit in third spot and while we have some tough games ahead, I have full confidence that the boys will give it a red-hot go like they did today. During the week I have been talking to the boys that nothing negative comes from hard work, and today proved that their hard work had a positive outcome. Congratulations boys to a great win. I am extremely proud of you all. To Luca - don't let today dampen your spirit and love for the game. I have been playing footy for a loooooooooong time and what happened today is extremely rare. Disappointing, but rare. Chin up. I need you back and firing to help us push towards finals. Congrats boys on a great win. Your maturity shone through. I am one proud coach. Goal kickers Nathan 1, Mackay 1, Connor1.

Great to have back into the team captain Sam who missed last game due to illness and goal kicker Dom who returned after breaking his arm in round 6. The U14's hosted Upper Ferntree Gully with both teams having 2 wins for the season and a must win game for the Tigers to keep our slim finals hopes alive. After a close first quarter of 3 goals to 2 goals the Tigers played some great team footy in the second term to boot 5 goals to 1 to lead at half time by 34 points. The third quarter saw the visitors kick the first 2 goals which stunned the Tigers into action kicking the next 5 goals to lead by 46 points at 3 quarter time. In the last the Tigers slotted 4 goals to 2 to run out winners by 66 points. A really solid team performance with everyone doing their job and great to see some different goal kickers especially Jarrod Chin kicking his first goals for the Tigers. Next weeks game is a mini final for us if we have any chance of playing finals. We are growing in confidence and I'm sure we can take on the next challenge head on. Go Tigers.

The under 14 girls took on the second placed Forest Hill at Walker Park. With injuries, illness and players being away we were down to thirteen players. Our defence in the first quarter was fantastic constantly repelling Forest Hill attack on goals. At half time we had 5 scoring shots to three but unfortunately we couldn’t score a goal. In the third quarter our backline was once again under pressure but managed to withstand most of the attacks. In the last quarter we were down to 12 fit players to 13 Forest Hill players it was only then that Forest Hill started to pull away. While we lost this game I couldn’t have been prouder of them the way they played and kept on trying right until the very end. Thanks to Olivia for playing when she was sick

It is hard to understand that this was the same team that played so well last week. The boys summed it up so well after the game - they just did not believe from the outset that they could win! Its hard to fathom because everyone but the playing group have an opposing belief. Make no mistake, our team has the ability and is very capable of being a very strong competitive team. However, if the players don’t share the same belief, the results speak for themselves. On a positive note, two players really stood out today as true on field champions. Ethan and George’s efforts were exemplary. Their shear determination for not allowing their player near the ball must have frustrated the life out of the opposition. Well done lads!! I would encourage all the boys to keep their chins up, learn from today and we will definitely grow as a team. Believe!!

Today we took on Heathmont with a very depleted side with injuries, school holidays and family commitments leaving us with only 17 fit players. I thought to myself that this was going to be a hard ask to come away with a big win. As the boys were lining up for the start of the game I noticed that Heathmont were short on numbers as well. The game would at least start with even numbers and it would now be up to us to get an early grip on the game. At the first bounce we came out firing and played an incredible brand of footy, grabbing an early lead that Heathmont would never be able to chase back. The mids worked incredibly well, using the ball cleanly in the tight clinches and putting our forwards into great scoring positions. The defence was also impenetrable as every time it went in there the boys rebounded and gave us an attacking entry up forward. Leading into the first half Heathmont lost 2 players from friendly fire and we approached their coaching box to say that we would only play 15 for the rest of the game, as that was all Heathmont had left. At least this would even up the game in numbers and make our boys more accountable. After the main break the boys looked a bit scrappy but soon found their feet again and ran away with the game scoring a massive win considering the numbers. Fantastic effort from all involved, with mentions going to Tommy S, Maxxy, Jaydos, Pows, Danny, Cam P, Timmy and Benny A for rucking the entire game and giving us first use every time. A special mention goes to TK for his efforts and also kicking two goals in the game, something I haven’t seen before! Go Tiges!!!!!
Final Score: Mitcham 23.19.157 d Heathmont 1.3.9
