Under 8 Yellow (Coach: Josh McConnell)
This round saw U8 Mitcham Yellow and Black face off in a tight encounter. Our captain James Watts played a magic game with his strong kicking game and led the team well. Both teams made great use of the ball sharing it well between their teammates. The improvement by all players is outstanding and great to see. With the rain coming down sideways both teams did not stop giving it all in the contest.
There were some fantastic individual efforts from Dan, Noah, both Charlie’s, Thomas Linnett, Ryan. A special thank you to Harley and Morgan who played with us today. Both showed outstanding skills and tenacity at the ball that helped setup many scoring opportunities. The Two Brothers Cafe award went to our skipper today for his magic kicking, leadership and the ability to bring other players into the game. Josh Dakic won the Paneal Healthy Nut bar award for always playing in front in the forward line, but most importantly when in the back line. Our Mitcham Medal went to most selfless player in the team. He is a player that is always looking to share the ball with his teams and you mostly find him at the bottom of the pack getting it so his teammates can kick a goal for the team. With the most goal assists this season the medal went to Thomas Woodhead; great game Thomas. Next week sees Mitcham Yellow take on Croydon at 9:30.
Under 8 Black (Coach: Jeff Kane)
Today we took on very well skilled Mitcham Yellow team and our Captain for the day was Ned. The first quarter left us a bit shell shocked at just how good this yellow team was, however there was an inspirational captains goal early by Ned to get us on our way. The boys are learning more and more each week, and this week we took a few things away from the yellow team like being first to the ball, and looking for our teammates. Jett played well today and gave it his all from his premier position in the ruck. Marco had another great game and the big play of the day went to Mason, who tried hard all day and never gives up. Joel played well getting to the ball first and Joshua, Cooper and Rishi played first to the ball as they have all season to date. Tarran and Archer gave us run from the centre and also spent a lot of their time in defense. Well done! Roy is improving each week and today showed that he will be a big part of our team’s success this year. Two medals were awarded today to our best on field who played their hearts out for the jumper; these two boys were Roy and Mason. Jett and Joel were also best for us as were Ned and Marco, well done boys. Also big thanks to Harley and Morgan who volunteered to play with the Yellow team against their own team mates and both boys played a great game.
Under 9 Yellow (Coach: Mark Butler)
The much-anticipated day arrived for the tiger boys from Mitcham to take on the rest of the EFL in the annual lightning premiership. Amid wind, rain, sunshine and thunder the boys took on Kilsyth, Lilydale, The Basin and Upper Ferntree Gully.
Game 1 against the home team Kilsyth was a cracking game of footy. We got out of the blocks early but lost the lead late. Some great team footy saw us claw back the lead and narrowly salute as victors by 1 point.
Mitcham 2.1.13 d Kilsyth 2.0.12
Goals: Heath Fox, Tyson Darmody
Game 2 saw us take on Lilydale and a superb team effort, where the boys worked hard to get first to the ball on most occasions, piled on the goals and kept the opposition scoreless.
Mitcham 5.1.31 d Lilydale 0.0.0
Goals: Heath Fox 2, Angus Butler, Will Serong, James Wilson
Game 3 was another tough match up against The Basin. We again led our opposition to the ball and with a great defensive attitude walked off the ground winners, again keeping the opposition scoreless.
Mitcham 2.2.14 d The Basin 0.0.0
Goals: Ty Crupi, Jackson Doherty
Game 4 was against another team who had won all their games in Upper Ferntree Gully. This game was a real see saw event with many score changes. We had to come from behind and against the odds, dug deep and pulled off a miraculous 1 point tiger win.
Mitcham 1.2.8 d Upper FTG 1.1.7
Goals: Ty Crupi
Thank you to all the tiger families, both yellow and black on a great day. It was great to support each other throughout the day. Well done guys on 4 fantastic, team orientated games of footy and congratulations on taking out the lightning premiership.
Under 9 Black (Coach: Peter Ajani)
Mitcham Black also played in the lightning premiership on Sunday. All the boys were on hand to take on some very skilled and talented A grade sides. The team battled hard against some extremely talented opponents and ended up winning the last of our three games in a thriller. In the first match we played Lysterfield Teal who really played exceptional footy. We then played Basin Red in a very close game which went done to the wire. Then we played the winner of our section, Waverley Blues Red who outplayed us in the first half but in the second half it was extremely even. The boys must have gained a lot of confidence as they came out all guns firing against Vermont and won an extremely close game. I awarded three Mitcham Medals for the day. One to Gus for his continued contested, never give up football, one to Lucas who attacked the ball as fiercely as anyone in the group and the last to Aaron who showed what happens when you trust yourself – he played his best footy so far this year. This was an extremely long day and I would like to thank everyone for making the day so enjoyable.
Under 10 (Coach: Brad Aujard)
Today we faced Mt Waverly away at Mt Waverly Reserve. Both teams had a successful Lightening Premiership the week before so we were expecting a thrilling match. The boys didn’t disappoint with both teams playing hard in close footy with neither side giving an inch for the whole day. We were excited to see our boys remain cool under pressure and stick to the game plan.
Goals: Aden and Tynan Best: Ashton and Leo
Under 11 (Coach: Sandi Marini)
Today we played at home against Lysterfield black. Led by our captain Luke the boy's were fired up and set us up with a 5 goal first quarter. A great spread of goal kickers ensured a difficult job for the Lysterfield backline. Liam was fierce in his return from injury and Hudson, Oscar and Lachlan combined a lethal combination in the middle. Sam, Ned were Solid in defense again with James hard work resulting in a late goal. Jeremy's pace was on display causing pressure and turnovers. Good effort from Robbie and Noah in the second half. Today’s best. Hudson, Liam, Ned, Jeremy, Oscar, George, James. Great to get a 10 goal win at home.
Final Score: Mitcham 9.15.69 d Lysterfield 1.0.6
Under 12 (Coach: Jason Philactides)
Today we obviously didn't get the result we were hoping to get. The wet and windy weather proved difficult for our boys today. In conditions like these, the brand of footy required to win a game needs to the boys to back themselves and win the footy. It took us a while to get started in the game, however, there were some brilliant passages of play and fantastic contributors on the day. I thought Damon and Fletchers game was brilliant. Damon’s' tap work is getting better every week and once our midfield time their run, I am very optimistic they will be unstoppable. Fletcher had his best game so far. He was hard at the ball, won many one on one contests, and won his position all day. We are now two wins and two losses, so we have a little bit of work to do to stay in touch with the top four, however if we believe in ourselves and put in the hard work, then I have no doubt we will be in the top four soon.
Final score: Bayswater 4.5.29 d Mitcham 0.2.2
Under 12 Girls (Coach: Matt Schneider)
Today we travelled up to Healsville and from the outset it was clear we were up against a bigger, more experienced team. Our girls were slow off the mark and second to the ball in the first half and it hurt us on the scoreboard. In the second half we were able to get more of the play but breaking through for a score was proving difficult. To the girl’s credit, they battled on, led by Riley, Steph and Lucy, with young Matilda A having a great game showing everyone how to go and get the footy. I am sure the girls will rest up after a tough encounter and bounce back next week
Final Score: Healsville 11.15. 81 d Mitcham 0.1.1
Under 13 (Coach: Mark Ross)
The U13's played Glen Waverley Rovers on a wet and windy day at Walker Park.
In the first quarter the Tigers conceded 2 goals into the breeze but fought back in the second to outscore the opposition and only trail by a single goal at half time. The third quarter saw the Tigers play some great team footy to add 2 unanswered goals and be ahead at three quarter time. The last quarter was a tough struggle with both teams kicking a single major, which enabled the Tigers to hold on to a well-earned team victory. Goal kickers were Dom-3, Ethan Wu-2 and Harry-1. "Uncle's Ball" went to Dan Harding who showed great endeavor all game and encouragement awards went to Benny who was "in and under" all game and Dom who was the dominant forward on the ground.
Final Score: Mitcham 6.9-45 v Glen Waverley Rovers 5.8-38
Under 14 (Coach: Shane Dickson)
The U14 team was comprehensively beaten by Boronia this week. Matthew Goodieson was the stand out player for Mitcham, whilst Jac Semple & Julian Hopkins also had strong games.
Best Players – Matthew Goodieson, Jac Semple & Julian Hopkins
Goals: Ryan Lynch & Ryan Walsh.
Final Score: Boronia 11.16.82 d Mitcham 2.2.14
Under 15 Girls (Coach: Luke Smith)
It hailed, it rained, the sun shone, it rained again, and I haven’t seen that much wind since the great flatulence incident of 1986, but it was the same for both sides in the picturesque Montrose in the foothills of the Dandenongs. The mountain folk had come down from the hills and were ready to play. We really had everything against us, wind, rain, and a ground with a hill to contend with. But the best-looking side Mitcham Football Club has ever produced was up to the task, running out winners by 6 goals. Best players, Tiana, Lexy, Bridget, Chelsea and Alana. Goal kickers Bridget 3, Enola 1, Alice 1 and Tiana 1. New award this week for best fake tan that we will be calling the OompaLoompa award, it was a 3 way tie between Alice, Ally and Liv. Best makeup Cat and Zoe (looking like they had come straight from the nightclub) and lastly the straightest hair comp was abandoned due to the “Frizzy” weather conditions which was most unfortunate, and no we cannot play football with a shower cap on. Thanks to all those who helped on the day and a quick thanks to the boys from Mooroolbark who lined up at the gate to give our girls a high five as they entered the ground, well done boys. Best of luck to Enola with her crook knee and we look forward to getting you back in a few weeks.
Final Score: Mitcham 6.14.50 d Montrose 2.0.12
Under 17 (Coach: Cam Horsey)
We took on St Simons/Lysterfield at home. We started the game ok although not dominant and led early with a couple of hard fought goals. With the windy conditions it was hard to get the radar right and goals were going to invaluable to the team. At the first break we were up by 20 odd points and we asked the group to press forward and try and put the game out of St Simons reach. Weren’t we in for a shock. We dropped our guard and the opposition scored 5 unanswered goals and we didn’t look like getting the pill. At the main break the group were given a bit of a rev up and we answered the call, bringing our structures and control back and led by 10 going into the last. We ran out the last quarter strongly and showed dominance around the ground winning comfortably in the end. We can’t allow teams any sort of control of the game, as it is so easy for the opposition to grab a footing in the game.
There were some good contributors for 4 quarters namely Spitter, jimmy N, Hoppo, Pows, Maxxy, Giles and Horse, but we need more contributors over the entire game if we are going to be challengers this year. Look forward to next week boys. Go Tiges!!!!
Final Score: Mitcham 8.14.62 d St. Simons / Lysterfield 5.4.34
