Under 8 Black (Coach: Jeff Kane)
Today our young Tigers in the Black Team took on a running skilled team from Kilsyth. Morgan was selected as Captain and his leadership of the group was excellent. Kilsyth got away well and out played us in the first quarter, until Tarryn took the game on in from the middle giving us a lot of run. He was backed up well by Cooper who gave us some drive into our forward half with some great kicking and goals by Harrison. Ned has stepped up this week in our team and played very well up forward, kicking straight and putting the Kilsyth defenders on the back foot. Joshua has a great boot on him and took some beautiful marks. Joshua has a great read on the play and knows exactly where to place himself to get the ball. In the third quarter our Captain (Morgan) had an inspirational run from the backline and was unlucky not to be rewarded with a goal. Young Harley played a tremendous game getting himself into the action and this helped us in the last quarter to kick 3 quick goals in succession. It was also young Mason’s idea to huddle up at the third quarter break with arms in the huddle, which maybe inspired the boys in the last quarter to kick those quick 3. We will do this now every week, thanks Mason! Archer took a speccy at the top of the square and converted this for 6 points; I think I will be hearing this played over and over for the next week from the lad. Rishi also played an awesome game with some tremendous marking and kicking, being first at the ball. The ANZAC Medal today awarded by the opposition coach went to Rishi, well played! Our best players today were Josh and Harley each getting a restaurant voucher for their tremendous efforts; awesome work lads!
Under 8 Yellow (Coach: Josh McConnell)
We played North Ringwood Black and it was a great display of the Anzac sprit from both teams. With numbers a little light on this week, two North Ringwood boys played for the Tigers. This was great for both clubs as the numbers were evened up and no player had to sit on the bench. Plenty of goals were kicked and there were great efforts by everyone all over the ground. The North Ringwood coaching staff selected Ryan McConnell as Anzac Medalist, while we also selected Charlie Cruse as an Anzac Day medal winner as well. Our coaching staff also selected an Anzac Day player from the North Ringwood team. Our best player today was number 20 for his effort across all four quarters and finishing with 3 or 4 goals. Well played young man, you had our boys running their hardest! Next week will be another exciting game against another great team in Mitcham Black! Game starts at 11:30 am.
Under 9 Black (Coach: Peter Ajani)
Mitcham Black played a very talented Lilydale side. The game was played in terrific spirit with two Tiger players playing for Lilydale each quarter. A very even contest saw Charlie receive the Anzac medal, great stuff Charlie, terrific game. Gabriel aka Superboot also had all his skills on display to win the Mitcham medal. There were numerous other boys who played very impressive games with the captains Paul and Lucas setting the standard and always being first to the ball. Special meant to Lucas who kicked his first goal for Mitcham. I am sure this will be one of many.
Under 9 Yellow (Coach: Mark Wilson)
The Under 9 Yellow boys had their long awaited first game at Walker Park in perfect conditions today. After a stirring Anzac ceremony, both teams played out a fantastic tight game, which was at times a war of attrition. The boys put their bodies on the line for each other and played another great team game. Skipper Charlie Trollope led from the front early, with plenty of support from the boys in the midfield. Mason Porter played another cracking game and was awarded the Anzac medal for a great all round performance including the standard pack marks. Henry Thompson was again in everything and won the Mitcham medal. These guys had great support from Stephen Stansfield and Will Serong who took home the Two Brothers and Panelan's award for their contested efforts.
Under 10 (Coach: Brad Aujard)
In a major triumph the Mitcham U10’s have repeated their success from last year and won” back to back” Lightening Premierships. Pinks Reserve in Kilsyth has proved to be a happy hunting ground for these boys and today’s win is a great reward for a hard-working bunch of boys and their coaching group. The day started in brilliant sunshine and the boys were up and about early as they recorded their first win against a very competitive East Burwood side. The Mitcham boys enjoyed a short break and then took on Glen Waverley Rovers who also won last year. In a very tight game our U10’s kicked the only goals for the game and had a nice win. With momentum building they faced a very tough assignment against an always dangerous Rowville but the boys were playing very tough, contested football and they enjoyed another stirring victory. The final match loomed against EFL heavyweights in Vermont and in a game that many said was the match of the day the Mitcham boys triumphed. Well-done boys! You should be really proud of your efforts and the club is very proud of you!
Under 11 (Coach: Sandi Marini)
Today we ventured to Coldstream to play the Anzac weekend clash against Coldstream. It was a hard fought game in dewy conditions, which made the ball difficult to handle at times. The game went down to the wire and we had a chance to seal the game in the dying seconds but fell short. Hudson's running down and fierce tackling was on display as well as Liam's gut running. Charlie Webb showed courage all day and won the Anzac medal. Best players today were George, Liam, Alexi, Charlie B, Charlie W and Hudson. This u11 team showed team spirit today. A few words about the importance of Anzac day and the spirit prior had the boys play that way for four quarters. “One in – All in!”
Final Score: Coldstream 3.5.23 d Mitcham 3.2.20
Under 12 (Coach: Jason Philactides)
Unfortunately we did not get the win today, however in the last quarter the boys showed great effort and fought back to nearly steal the win. Congratulations to Jack Goldsmith for the winning the Anzac medal. He had a great game and showed what the Anzac spirit is all about, in particular, helping out an injured opposition player. While the first three quarters wasn’t our best footy, our last quarter was outstanding. Everybody got into the play and contributed to the close finish. Thanks to Matt for his Anzac speech, inspiring the boys on such an important weekend. There are lots of positives to come out of the game today, and if we continue to work hard and come together as a team, the next win is only around the corner. Goals: Nathan 2, JP 1.
Final Score: GW Hawks 5.5.35 d Mitcham 3.5.23
Under 12 Girls (Coach: Ruby Schneider)
Today the girls played against Montrose and had their first win for the season. The game was pretty even for the whole day but the girls worked really hard and have improved so much in a short time, especially with their tackling, use of voice and overall teamwork. Montrose needed an extra player so we gave them a player for each quarter. I would like to say a thank you to Gemma, Amber, Holly & Milly for filling in for a quarter each. We had 5 different goal kickers those being Riley, Chloe, Stella, Matilda R and Lucy O. Steph won the Anzac medal for the game due to her hard work and great rucking skills. Every girl played a great game and worked extremely hard. I am very proud of them. Well-done girls!
Final Score: Mitcham: 6.0.36 d Montrose: 4.1.25
Under 13 (Coach: Mark Ross)
The U13's ANZAC weekend clash was against East Burwood away. The boys started well kicking 4 goals to 3 in the first quarter to lead at the first break. Some basic mistakes and good teamwork by the opposition saw them kick away to lead at half time by 5 goals. The third term was a little more even with the Tigers showing more endeavor. In the last quarter we failed to kick a goal but fought the game out well. Congratulations to Jamie winning the ANZAC medal awarded by the opposition coach and to Blake and Ethan Wu on winning the encouragement awards.
Goals: Joel 2, Wu 2, Harry and Alex 1 each.
Final Score: East Burwood 13.21.99 d Mitcham 6.2.38
Under 14 (Coach: Shane Dickson)
Although the boys went down by 56 points, they showed plenty of fight and determination. Our tackling pressure was exceptional for the entire game, but Blackburn were able to run and carry to open up more opportunities. Two new players started this week - Rylan & Ryan and both had strong games & are welcome additions to the U14 side.
Anzac Medalist as voted by the opposition coach - Julian Hopkins
Best Players – Julian Hopkins, Jarrod Cumming, Matt Makao, Bailey Hunter, Rylan Leitner
Goals: Matthew Makao (2), Matthew Cost (2), Nicholas Manks (1)
Final Score:Blackburn Red 13.11.89 d Mitcham 5.3.33
Under 15 Girls (Coach: Luke Smith)
As the sun bathed the MCG of the east, the best looking side ever to grace the hallowed turf of Walker Park took to the field. Standing as one for the Anzac Day reflection the girls were steely eyed and full of purpose. Knowing it was to be a titanic struggle, the tigress’s fought in the true Anzac spirit through out, going down by a few goals in a gripping contest between two talented and determined sides. Congratulation to Ally N for winning the double recognition of “Anzac Day medalist” and the straightest hair. Best on ground could have been shared by at least 10 players but a special mention to Lexy, Tiana, Chelsea, Alice and Bridget. Goal kickers Alice 2, Enola 1, Lexy 1. Most importantly best makeup went to Cat, best tan again goes to Liv C, and best hair went to Sally. Best injury goes to Enola and no we don't have a cure for a "busted butt"! A big thank you to Ferntree Gully. They were a very competitive side and played in Great Spirit. Thanks also to all those who helped throughout the day.
Final Score: Ferntree Gully 7.12.54 d Mitcham 4.4.28
Under 17 (Coach: Cam Horsey)
Today we headed down the freeway to take on Upper Ferntree gully and after suffering two losses from the first two games, we were hoping to turn things around and put a win on the board. After a good week on the track the feeling around the group was that we were a big chance to take the points. Wearing our ANZAC jumpers for the first time, the boys started extremely well putting on 3 or 4 goals in a dominant display. The attack on the ball was ferocious, but what was more impressive was the protection the boys gave each other around the contest with probably the most “1 percenters” I have seen in a long time. We didn’t leave it in the first quarter, but sustained the pressure till the end of the game, which was highlighted by the end score. Today we won the game because everyone contributed and played their part. A special mention to our ANZAC medal winner – Tim Ross who was fantastic all day and a worthy winner. Other mentions to other players on the day who made a massive impact, J Powson, Hoppo, J Nichol, Horse, Gilesy, Maxxy, Spitter. I really could mention the whole team but these guys were instrumental at the start in setting us up. Well done boys, one happy coach. Go Tiges!!!!
