Round 2 took place on the weekend for the Mitcham Junior Football Club. The Under 9's played Wantirna South at Walker Park in their first home game for the season. Coach Carlo Fanfulla spoke of the growing confidence his team is gaining. “A great day and a great turn out for our first home game. The boys were revved up to get going in front of our home crowd. We were a very competitive team in the first half, lead by our captain this week, Lachlan Gilchrist. The boys scored four goals, which gave us a lot of confidence. Our midfield played very well, particularly in the way that they moved the ball into our forward line. Being a very good side, Wantirna South did seem to get the better of us in the second half, however we are now feeling good going into round three with an under 9 side proving we're here to play some good football. Well-done boys. The more we play together, the better we will become. GO TIGERS!”
The Under 10’s travelled up Springvale Road to take on the Zebra’s of Forest Hill. Coach Jason Philacides was excited with the team’s performance. “Another great performance from the boys today! Initially the day didn’t start well with Forest Hill informing me they only had 14 players, however this turned into a positive as we were able to loan Forest Hill 4 players for each quarter and this resulted in every Mitcham player getting a full game today. For the 4 quarters we put a lot of pressure on Forest Hill and it showed on the scoreboard with multiple goal kickers. It’s very pleasing to see the improvement from last week’s game, in-particular the way the boys are accurately disposing of the footy by hand in pressure situations. We did a number of times throughout the game, which resulted in scoring opportunities. Well done to Thomas and Preston for captaining the team. Today was a fantastic team effort. Some players that stood out, especially with their efforts to follow their kick and get to the next contest were Denzell Allen, Thomas Russell, Luca Cavicchia, Jack Goldsmith and Matteo Di Vincenzo.”
Goal Kickers: Denzell 2, Nathan 2, Daniel T 2 (1 for FH), Daniel N 1, Loal 1, Jamie B 1, Matt 1, Nick 1
The Under 11’s played with the knowledge they were respecting the passing of Ethan Miller’s Great Grandfather. The Tigers won each quarter despite a strong UFT team. There were no periods in the game where the players relaxed, they worked hard all day determined to get the 4 points. Callum Mead played his bravest game yet, and Patrick Cotter continues to keep the opposition honest. It was great to see goals come from different players, some with their first goal in the EFL. The work ethic from players like Sam Balman and Joel, continued to helped create scoring opportunities. Jake, Lachlan, Jamie and Remi al scored goals and it was exciting to see Riley Holloway booting the final goal in the 4th quarter to seal the game. Well-done team!
Final Score: Mitcham 5.6.36 def UFT 2.2.14
The Under 12's took on Upper Ferntree Gully at Walker Park. Coach Marcus Webb sent through this match report: “It was a real tough day at our home ground this week as we welcomed our newest tiger in the group, Kuot. Outside of that there was not a lot to be positive about. Sure enough the boys tried hard and to their credit kept on trying right to the end even if they were beaten for most of the day. There were a few that managed to contribute at different times throughout - Lincoln, Harry, Michael, Emi, Luke B. However there were only a couple that won their positions like Julian who was great, winning most of the hit-outs and providing some good drive from full back along with Max Webb who playing down back kept each of his opponents quiet by sticking to his role. That’s the challenge for the boys - knowing our roles, sticking to them and improving as a team! So, let’s get to it at training boys!”
Final Score: UFG 7.8.50 d Mitcham 0.3.3
The Under 14's headed up to the hills to take on Montrose. Coach Cam Chivers had this to say: “It was a game we touted early on as a big one for us. Our aim was to go in at the Easter break 2-0 and we managed to reach our goal with a good team performance. The start of the game was very close which we expected but we added a little bit of scoreboard pressure late in the first to go into the 2nd with a slight lead which set the tone for the rest of the game. I am really pleased with the application and adherence to the game plan as well as the discipline to maintain the pressure over four quarters. We will continue to work hard on our game to up the tempo in the coming weeks.”
Final Score: Mitcham 18.10.118 d Montrose 5.4.34
The Under 17's traveled to the Scoresby senior ground to take on The Scoresby Hawks. Coach Gavin Ward said this of his teams game: “With the ground in magnificent condition on a fine sunny afternoon perfect for football, our boys attacked the footy with a fierce desire and passion. While it was great to see our boys remain disciplined and focused on the job at hand, it was also pleasing to see them starting to gel and team together with some excellent passages of play. With the Easter break this weekend we look forward to another hard contest in a fortnight’s time up at The Basin.”
Final Score: Mitcham 13.10.88 d Scoresby 0.5.5
