The Mitcham Junior Football Club is delighted to announce that one of our favourite sons, Simon Godfrey has been appointed as under 17 coach for the up coming 2013 football season. Simon began his career with The Mitcham juniors before being recruited by the Eastern Ranges U18 side. He played VFL football for Box Hill before being placed on the Melbourne supplementary list in 1999 and in the year 2000 Melbourne Football Club drafted Simon with pick 14 in the AFL National Draft.
Having played every game in the VFL for Sandringham in 2000, Simon had his first taste of Senior AFL football towards the end of the 2000 season as a replacement for knee reconstruction victim James McDonald, before returning to Sandringham in the VFL and playing in the senior premiership side.
Simon began his career as a midfielder and finished fifth in the demons 2003 best and fairest and finished his career as a tagger, having played on some of the AFL’s most elite players. Simon won another senior VFL premiership with the Zebras in 2005 before retiring from AFL Football in 2007 having played 105 senior games for the Melbourne Demons.
In 2008 Simon moved to EFL club Norwood and was made captain of the club in 2010 leading Norwood into their s first ever Division One EFL finals series. In 2011 Simon returned home to his junior club Mitcham to help bolster a young senior playing group and at 30 years of age he has brought back invaluable leadership for the clubs younger players with his experiences at both AFL and VFL level.
A regular at junior training and games over the last two years The Mitcham Junior Football Club is proud to say that Simon Godfrey is a true Tiger and we are grateful for his time and effort with our junior players and look forward to his contiued contribution to our club
