The Pony Club is a recognised youth organisation for those interested in horses and ponies and riding. It is the largest association of riders in the world. It is a voluntary youth organisation that exists to promote the physical, mental and spiritual development of young people, encouraging in them an awareness of responsibility, sportsmanship and citizenship.
The Pony Club differs from other youth movements because the horse is used as the main centre of interest around which to cultivate strength of character and self-discipline. The object of the Pony Club is to encourage young people to learn to enjoy all kinds of sport connected with horses and riding, to provide instruction in riding and to instil in its members the proper care of their animals. Membership is open to anyone under 26 years of age. Ordinary members consist of boys and girls who have not reached the age of 17 years. Membership terminates at the end of the year in which the person reaches 26.
The Pony Club movement came into being in England in 1929 to encourage young people in their riding. Due to the popularity of this activity, it is now represented in no less than 25 countries and has a membership exceeding 70,000. Australia has in excess of 40% of Clubs and 25% of the worldwide membership Ã- by far the greatest representation.
There are over 670 Clubs, a total membership of 31,000 and a high growth rate of 10% per annum. In Victoria, the first Pony Club was formed in 1954. All Clubs are affiliated with the Pony Club Association of Victoria Inc and through that, with the Australian Pony Club Council. For information see: www.ponyclubvic.org click here Pony Club:
