Swans consolidate finals position

Sale United returned to the winners circle with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over fellow finals aspirants Monash.

The Swans were keen to make amends for last weeks loss to Falcons and were on the board early when a great through ball from Ashley Ross was neatly put away by in form striker Jon Piefke.

The game turned into an arm wrestle with neither side willing to give an inch and at half time the score remained at 1-0.

After the restart the Wolves attacked searching for the equaliser but the Sale defence headed by goal keeper Jacob Richardson was up to the challenge.

Callum Clancy made it 2-0 with an attacking run from midfield to beat Monash goal keeper Russell Musgrove who had advanced off his line.

It was 3-0 when Clancy converted a penalty after Tommy Nguyen was brought down in the box.

Ray Allred rounded out the scoring for Sale after chasing down a wayward pass to coolly finish.

In the shadows of full time Monash claimed a consolation goal when a penalty was converted by Ashley Birrell 4-1.

Moe United vs Newborough-Yallourn United

Moe has climbed to fifth on the Gippsland Soccer League ladder with a narrow 1-0 victory over rivals Newborough-Yallourn.

The start of the first half saw Moe holding the early attacking ascendancy but they were unable to convert squandering several chances.

NYU came right into the match and almost claimed the lead when Jayden Mathison beat the Moe defence and narrowly pushed his shot wide.

The second half continued in scrappy fashion and the Combine looked like they’d done enough to claim a point.

However, with ten minutes to play Red Devil Matt Shearing pounced on a well placed Mark McHallam cross to give Moe its second win on the trot.

Wash outs

The remaining scheduled fixtures Falcons vs Churchill, Olympians vs Fortuna and Tyers vs Traralgon City were all washed out.

The Gippsland Soccer League is expected to reschedule these matches by rejigging the scheduled split round in late July with an announcement early this week.

Round 11 Preview

On Sunday Traralgon City (4th) host Sale United (3rd) with both teams eager to put a gap on the chasing pack of teams.  Last time Traralgon City won narrowly 1-0 but the Swans have improved since then and with Jon Piefke providing a goal scoring avenue the Roosters will have their work cut out for them.

Also on Sunday Monash (6th) face Falcons (7th) in a must win for both clubs after drawing 2-2 last time and Moe (5th) will be on its toes when its hosts the unpredictable Tyres (8th) after losing to the Lightning 5-3 last time.

On Saturday night Fortuna (2nd) play Newborough-Yallourn (10th) with memories of its narrow last minute 1-0 win back in round 2.  Also on Saturday night Churchill (1st) plays Olympians (9th) with the Blues aiming to improve on its 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Rams last time they met.

Valley Squad Reunion

Local soccer identities Jan Huizer and Gerry Clarke are organising a reunion day of all players, officials, referees and supporters of the former Latrobe Valley/ Gippsland men’s soccer squads from the 1970’s through to the early 2000’s.

“Over the years there’s been hundreds of players represent our region and we thought it’s a great time to get together to reminisce over some good times”. Former squad manager Jan Huizer said.

The Reunion Family Day is on Sunday October 7th from midday to 6pm at the Churchill United Soccer Club rooms.  The club will cater with BBQ and canteen food on offer plus the bar will also be operating.

“We just want the day to be as casual as possible with everyone encouraged to bring family and friends along on the day”.

A display of old photos and newspaper articles will be on display and Huizer is hoping attendees will also add to the collection, “Old photos and stories will be the theme of the day”. Huizer added.
