GOAL with three minutes remaining from captain-coach Jon Piefke ensured the Gippsland soccer season finished on a high note for Sale United as its second division team claimed the Nan Bosma Cup.

United, who defeating Fortuna 1-0 on Saturday at Morwell, only made the final after Warragul withdrew having already scheduled its post-season trip for last weekend. The cup finals were pushed back a week because of a round being rescheduled due to a dispute between the Gippsland Soccer League and referees.

It was a change of fortune for United, who had to forfeit its premiership semi-final two weeks earlier due to a lack of players.

Fortuna partly made up for the disappointment of losing the senior GSL grand final the weekend prior by defeating Falcons 4-3 after extra time in the Battle of Britain Cup final. After Fortuna led 2-0 at half-time, Falcons came back to level the scores at 2-2 after 90 minutes before the Orangemen claimed the cup in extra time.

The win caps off a successful year for Fortuna, who also won the senior championship after finishing the home and away season on top of the table.

The reserves Shopwell Trophy was won by Churchill United, who defeated Monash 2-1. The trophy goes with the championship and premiership cups the side won during the season.

Churchill also claimed the women’s Browne-Huizer Trophy with a 3-0 win over Monash, completing its own season treble.
