Surf Coast came from behind to defeat Surfside Waves 2-1 in a thrilling Football Federation Victoria Geelong Women’s Division 1 Grand Final.

Despite looking very good early on, Surfside were narrowly edged out, with Surf Coast’s composure through midfield the key to their victory.

Lara Williams opened the scoring for the Waves ten minutes into the match, chasing down a long ball and coolly guiding the ball past the keeper.

The league Golden Boot winner Williams was the focal point in attack for Surfside throughout the match and looked dangerous, but was unable to get her name on the scoresheet again due to the quality Surf Coast defence, who only conceded seven goals all season.

Surf Coast had the bulk of the possession in the opening half and after several near misses they were able to get the equaliser just before the break.

Minnie Feakes was the quickest to react after a shot from outside the box came off the upright, hammering the ball home from close range.

The winner came after 60 minutes when Cassidy Jotin made a terrific run down the left wing before cutting inside the box and slotting the ball into the net.

Surfside kept up the pressure in search of an equaliser, looking very dangerous on the counter, though the young Surf Coast side held firm and claimed the silverware.

Lara defeated Bellarine Sharks 5-1 to win the Women’s Division 2 Grand Final.
