Womens and Men's DIV 1 Summary round 8

Women's summary:

Geelong 2 Deakin Uni 3

This was a very evenly played and close encounter between the two teams. The Geelong team played the offside game to perfection where in the first half Deakin players were called offside on regular occurrences. However, midway through the first half Jana Trimcevski was able to beat it and scored the first goal.  About ten minutes later Geelong scored when a ball was crossed in from the right and one of their players was able to just get it passed the keeper Astrid Loigom. Within the first couple of minutes in the second half Maddie Revell got through the Geelong defence and unselfishly played across to Jana Trimcevski who hit the ball into the right side of the goal. About twenty minutes later Deakin scored again with a beautiful shot past the keeper by Maddie Revell. Geelong then played a stronger attack creating numerous opportunities and got one back with a beautiful shot from the right which gave the Deakin keeper no chance. Deakin’ s defence held off the attack for the rest of the game and came of winning 3 -2.

Barwon 2 Breakwater Eagles 0

Barwon were able to break through for their second win of the season, disposing of Breakwater 2-0 at Reserve Road. Teams were fairly evenly matched throughout the whole game with Barwon's midfield duo of Marnie Harrington and Emma Lukacz proving a successful pair. The score did not do justice to the heart and passion that each Breakwater player put into the game. And it is not a lack of skill that defies the team, but simply the inability to see the ball into the back of the net, despite numerous chances.  Barwon’s passing to their forwards allowed Emma Rea and Vanja Smiljanic through to score for Barwon, one in each half.  Still hampered by injury, illness and missing star keeper Ashton Theakstone did not help the plight of the Eagles, who still remain positive towards the rest of the season.

Men's Summary:

Lara 2 Breakwater Eagles 2

Sundays game between breakwater and Lara was a tale of two halfs. Breakwater dominated a young Lara side in the first half and took the lead in the 29th minute through a David Jeynes cross / shot, then doubled their lead through a Matt Ward header in the 35 minute. In the 2nd half Lara responded to a half time spray and started to keep possession and create chances, on the hour mark a free kick was won and Kieron Moore put it into the top corner from 35yrds out. Then 5 minutes later Jean Paul Lavigne won a penalty that Moore converted to make the scores level. In the dying minutes Damien Nasta had a chance to win it but dragged his effort wide, so once again these two teams shared the points in an entertaining game which managed to keep Lara on top of the league

Geelong Rangers 1  Barwon 0

A hard fought game with both teams putting in some hard, but fair tackles. Barwons wide players caused a lot of problems against Rangers, but the Rangers midfield caused Barwon concern. With limited chances the half time score of 0 - 0 was a fair score line. The second half saw Barwon take most of the possession and create a couple chances, but some great keeping by the Rangers GK kept Barwon at bay. Half way into the 2nd half Rangers scored from an unfairly awarded penalty. Barwon then had a pen of their own, but a great double save from the Rangers keeper, first from the spot and then the rebound again kept Barwon at bay. Rangers looked to counter attack with pace but Barwon will feel hard done by losing their second game in 3 weeks.
