Womens and Mens DIV 1 Summary, Round 7

Women's report:
Surfside Waves 1 Deakin Uni 2
It was third position Deakin Ducks who are presently on a winning run after beating Surf Coast and Breakwater up against the undefeated Surfside Waves. Last time these two teams met a few weeks ago Surfside Waves outclassed Deakin by winning 4 – 0. However round 7  will stand as the first time that Surfside have been defeated this season. Deakin outclassed the Waves especially in the midfield with tremendous runs down the wing by Maddie Revell, and centre Lucy Johnston who regularly got the ball to the forwards; some outstanding saves by Waves keeper Rachel Sanzaro kept the score at 0--0 for 20 minutes. Deakin went one up half way through the first half from a goal from Jana Trimcevski. The waves came out firing in the second half, playing some better football, and got a real peach of a goal after some good build up play, Maddy Bennett hit in a terrific cross for Lara Williiams bullet header to fly in.

It was game on and within the next ten minutes Deakin scored again through Jana Trimcevski. With four substitutes the Deakin coach rotated the team on a regular basis, ensuring that each of his players got a good run. Again in the second half Deakin created plenty of opportunities to score but were unable to convert. A great win for Deakin indicating that have really come out to play this season.

Surfcoast 5 Breakwater Eagles 0

This week saw Breakwater once again tackle the highly ranked Surfcoast team. Strong winds and heavy rain were the predominant conditions throughout the match. The first half saw Surfcoast with the wind advantage, which aided them to a 3-nil lead by half time. An already injury and illness plagued Breakwater team was forced to take the field without a sub in the second half. Never the less, the girls rallied and fought hard in their attempts to get a score on the board. Unfortunately such goal attempts by Erin Bourke, Lauren Salaviejus and Taylor Harris all went unrewarded. Frozen and drenched to the bone both teams fought on, Surfcoast managing a fourth goal part way into the second half. Not long after Breakwater defender Lauren Barnard was forced from the game with an ankle injury that left Breakwater one player down. Breakwater tried their hardest to halt Surfcoast’s advances, however a final goal was conceded leaving the full time score at Surfcoast 5-0 Breakwater.

Barwon 3 Geelong 5

With Geelong playing 1 player down, you may have expected Barwon to come out on top. It was not to be with Geelong skipping away to win by 2 goals.  It was a very tight game the whole way through with no clear domination. Barwon tried a different approach this week with swapping Mim Petros into sweeper and moving Zoe Rule into the defensive mid position. This allowed a better link between defence and midfield proving a winner.
Goals were scored in a flurry in the first half finishing at 3-3 at the end of the first half. Unfortunately and injury to a midfielder caused Barwon to loose concentration in the 2nd half allowing Geelong to come out 5-3 victors.

Men's report:

Barwon 10 Lovely Banks 0
The Barwon coach demanded a response after suffering their first loss of the season last time out and what a response it was! Leading 3 nil inside 25 mins Lovely Banks started to put Barwon under pressure but they couldn't penetrate the Barwon defence. The second half saw Barwon score 3 more inside the opening 10 mins and after that it was a case of how many. Hat tricks for Alex Kelly, Tully Rowland in his first full game of the season and super sub Craig Cameron Smith also bagged a hat trick with captain Craig Stewart netting his first of the season. Great team performance and Lovely banks should be congratulated for their never say die attitude!

Geelong Rangers 0 Lara 3

Lara and Geelong Rangers continued their rivalry on sunday with Lara prevailing with the points after a 3-0 victory.
The first half saw Some strong pressure from rangers with Troy hardy, dale Harris and Darren McCallum causing problems. Eligh Kremerer made a couple if great saves off McCullam and Harris.
The second half saw Lara pushing up and took a deserved lead through a Damien Nasta finish in the 52nd minute. A great through ball by Kieron Moore led to Nasta doubling his tally. Lara's fitness started to show and in the last minute a cross by Nasta finally saw Heath Urquart score his first goal for the club to make it a 3-0 victory.
