Womens Div 1 summary, Round 2

Women's Goalfest continues in to round 2

After Round 1 saw Surfside defeat Barwon 11-0, Geelong defeat Barwon Heads 6-4 and Surfcoast defeat Breakwater 7-0, could round 2 serve up a repeat performance, the answer is a resounding yes! And for the first time in Geelong's history, the Women's Division 1 has more teams in it than the Men's division 1; clearly womens soccer in the Geelong, Surfcoast and Bellarine regions is on the up.

Breakwater Eagles 1 Surfside Waves 4

Surfside Waves continued their winning ways with a convincing win over Breakwater Eagles at White Eagle House.Scorers for the Waves were Molly Strano, Lara Williams, Maddie Hill and Cassie Hynes

Surfside waves travelled to White Eagle House to face a eagles side coming of a heavy loss to Surfcoast and meet a very different team. Surfside were full of confidence after there good start to the season and had Breakwater on the back foot from the start ,welcoming back Molly Strano to the side she soon took control of the midfield with partner in crime Cassie Hynes and pressure on the Breakwater goal soon told as Waves went one up. As more pressure built the Waves wasted some golden chances hitting the woodwork twice then Lara Williams scored to put waves two up. Not disheartened, the Breakwater girls fought hard and midway through the first half a fantastic finish by Lauren Salaviejus saw Breakwater on the board. Waves hit straight back to go in 3 1 up at the break finding the back of the net after a great shot scraped the tips of keeper Ashton Theakstone’s fingers. Surfside continued to press forwarding in the second half against a hardworking Eagles out fit who by the way they play will soon turn there results around. The second half was a much cleaner one for the girls from Breakwater. Great defensive work and some fantastic one-on-one saves by Ashton kept Surfside to a single goal in the second half, when a free kick ended in a header over the goal line. Leaving the full time score at Breakwater 1-4 Surfside. Surfside stand outs Annie Nutku, Nina Grundy and Monica D"allessandro.

Barwon Heads 0 Deakin Uni 8

After coming off a first week bye for season 2012 Deakin Ducks Woman’s team played their first game on Saturday in beautiful weather conditions, coming up with an 8 – 0 win against Barwon Heads at Barwon Heads Cricket Club. Deakin overall were just too strong, playing with five substitutes and interchanging the girls on a regular basis; whilst the Hammerheads started with eleven and suffered two injuries through the game. Madeline Lee Gow, Deakin’s main striker came away with 5 goals. Madeline Revell also scored 2 goals, one of which was a long drive from the left outside the area and Jana Trimcevski scored one inside the box. The score would have been more had it not been for some good goalkeeping by Barwon Head’s veteran Keeper Karen Costello. Deakin midfield played very well and continually created opportunity for the forwards to score. When Barwon Heads created opportunities to score Deakin’s defence was just too strong. Deakin’s captain and central defender was forced to come off half way through the second half with a knee injury.

Barwon 2 Geelong 7

A tough game between these two rivals at Grovedale Reserve.A highly competitive account by both teams but slowly Geelong began to break down the Barwon team.Stand out players and scorers for Geelong were Millie Livesey, Amy Dojanovski and Emily Jovanovski.

Surfcoast had a bye this week but will entertain Barwon Heads next week.
