Slammers hammer Giants home - Bunbury Herald

Bunbury Herald

The Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers sent a warning to the rest of the competition with a resounding 127-88 hammering of Goldfields Giants at the Eaton Recreation Centre on Saturday night.

After reaching the finals for the first time in 13 years last season the Slammers have made no secret about their desire to go one better in 2014 and the early signs appear positive for Ty Harrelson’s squad.

Led by Clive Weeden, who missed the Slammers’ 2013 finals series against East Perth, the home side jumped out to a 15-point quarter time lead which it extended at every subsequent break.

Doubts about the Slammers’ scoring ability in the absence of last year’s standout shooter Jay Warren were put to rest with four players — Harrelson (31), Weeden (30), new import Todd Hendley (20) and Lee Smith (13) — all hitting double digits.

Hendley and Weeden led the side with eight rebounds each while returning co-captain Josh Weir topped the assists column with six.

Perhaps most encouraging for the Slammers was the quality of play from the bench, with no player recording less than 15 minutes of court time as Harrelson rotated his line-up at will.

Speedy Giants guard Duran Blue provided some early headaches for the Slammers but after his hand went cold the visitors struggled to impact the scoreboard.

The victory places the Slammers second on the SBL ladder.
