Injured Manunda Hawks forward Fiona Sharp believes her side is in for a real tough contest against reigning AFL Cairns Women’s League premiers South Cairns at Holloways Beach today.
Both teams gave a 1-1 record after two rounds, with North Cairns the opposition to inflict defeat in both occasions.
Sharp, who expects to be out until January with a knee injury, said not much separated Hawks and Cutters on paper.
“I think it’ll be really close. We get a lot of girls back who weren’t there last week and that will make a difference,” she said.
“We do have a lot of new players this year, but at the same time we’ve got about 80 per cent of our girls back from the last two seasons. “Overall I think we match up pretty good against Cutters.”
One player sharp expects a big game from today is Akiko Nishi.
The winner has been best on ground for the Hawks in the opening two rounds and was names clubs most improved player last season.
“She’s as skinny as a rake so it just goes to show you don’t have to be big to play the game,”
“She’s Japanese and hadn’t even seen the game until a couple of years ago and now she’s our best player. The opposition doesn’t know too much about her and they let her run amok.”
The game starts at 3:30pm.
Also at Holloways Beach, the undefeated North Cairns take on the Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs babes at 5pm.
