Practice made perfect for south Cairns on Saturday when the defending AFL Cairns Women’s League premiers opened their season account against Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs Babes.
After losing their Round 1 game the week before the Cutters rebounded in style to beat the babes 6.5 (41) to 4.7 (31) at Watsons Oval.
It was an especially satisfying victory for Cutters forward Laura Martin, who was on the phone all morning making sure here team had enough players to take the field.
“At the start of the day we only had 6 players, so I was ringing people asking them to please play for us,” Martin said.
“But it was a really good game in the end and we had a lot of fun doing it. I don’t really know how we won. Centrals were fit and fast, but the Cutters girls just lifted when we needed them too.”
Martin said a solid mid-week training session helped the Cutters young players find their feet.
“There was a big improvement from last week,” she said. “At training we worked on things like getting front and centre and all the basics and it worked out. The girls were able to put into practice all the things they learned and were really happy about it.”
Martin, however, said the return of Cutters on-baller Ashleigh Singleton was the difference between the sides. “She plays like she’s 10 foot tall and bulletproof,” said Martin of Singleton.
Also starring for the Cutters were Ryma Pau and Ellie Martin.
In Saturdays other game North Cairns thumped the Manunda Hawks 10.7 (67) to 3.1 (19)
