SPARC and Basketball New Zealand Basketball recognize that the development of quality coaching across New Zealand goes hand in hand with the development of quality basketball
in the country.

An important aspect of this development is the recognition that grass roots, development, elite and senior coaches are equally valuable to the sport and the BBNZ Coach Development is the starting point that contains information and resources for coaches across the whole New Zealand Basketball community.

The Basketball’s coach development framework also recognizes that coaches develop in a variety of ways and that there is a diverse range of development opportunities available to New Zealand basketball coaches.

Coaching Development Framework

Within Basketball New Zealand’s coaching development framework, formal coaching development uses learning modules.

These will eventually cover the full range of learning experiences for each knowledge level (beginning, practising and advanced), within all three basketball coaching communities (participation, development and elite).

These modules BBNZ - Coach development modules are either facilitated or self-completed. The self-completed will all be introduced on this website, to be completed at your own speed.

To be credited with the completion of any module you must first complete t he Coaching Safety Net BBNZ Safetynet and the Coaching Starter Pack BBNZ - starter pack . These modules will take approximately 30 minutes each to complete.

COACHING SAFETY NET

Introduces a code of ethics for coaches and basic safety concepts for coaching Basketball that will help:

  • Identify key elements of your role and your responsibilities to your players
  • Provide a safe environment for your players
  • Identify and apply key strategies for your own protection (and those in your management team).

COACHING STARTER PACK

Basketball coaching is about sharing your knowledge and experience, making Basketball fun and giving everyone a go. Coaches play an important role in making sure players learn to enjoy taking part in sport and physical activity.

This session is designed to help coaches get started in coaching. It provides tips on:

  • Your role as a coach in meeting the needs of your players
  • Being inclusive and fair
  • Communication
  • Using Games for understanding
  • Running a coaching session
  • Planning

Coaching Process

This module is designed for practicing coaches in any of the three coaching communities and covers the following learning outcomes:

  • Explain their philosophy of coaching and how it incorporates athlete-centred coaching approaches
  • Demonstrate an understanding of varied coaching approaches
  • Implement and reflect on varied coaching approaches
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, implement and reflect on the principles of learning (eight effective coaching strategies)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, implement and reflect on the principles of communication
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, implement and reflect on principles of feedback
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, implement and reflect on principles of questioning

Athlete Development (Team Play Context)

This module is designed for advanced coaches in the development and elite coaching communities and covers the following learning outcomes:

  • Identify the characteristics and needs of individual athletes from his/her team/group (team play context)
  • Design a training session that includes activities and games to cater for your athletes’ individual and group characteristics and needs (team play context)
  • Implement a training session that caters for your athletes’ individual and group needs (team play context)

Are now available to be downloaded from BBNZ Coaching Development modules.

If you wish to be credited with completing one of these modules contact your Regional Coach & Player Development Officer (RCPD).

You will have to show them a copy of the completed module and they will then notify the BBNZ office. Please note, to be credited with the completion of any module you must first complete the Coaching Starter Pack.
