TOP YEAR AWARDED

The Maitland Mustangs rewarded and applauded their finest achievements of 2010 at the club’s annual award presentation at the Federation Centre on Saturday night.

And it was the Mustangs men in the Waratah Australian Basketball League who picked up the highest honour and were named the club’s team of the year.

Their fairy tale run to the play-offs was capped with the club’s maiden appearance in the Waratah League grand final.

They fell five points short of a state championship title.

The Mustangs’ charge was led by former National Basketball League player and former Australian Boomer Scott McGregor, who was named the team’s most valuable player (MVP).

Following the finals series McGregor was named in a Waratah League All Star five, while Mustangs

co-captain Andy Allen picked up most assists and best defensive player.

On Saturday night Allen was crowned the Mustangs’ best defensive player, while Ken Artist was named as the Mustangs’ most improved.

In other awards, the MVP for the state league men was Nathan Lovett, while the youth league’s best and fairest went to men’s skipper Sam Cross and women’s player Jessie-Ann Baldwin.

Coach of the year went to women’s under-18s coach Jim Noud, who led his team to a semi-final spot in the NSW State Championships in division one.

The most improved team went to the under-12 women’s two squad, Amy Fox was announced as the recipient of the Graham Pidgeon award for senior player contribution other than playing, while the junior representative referee of the year went to Craig Goodman.

Life membership was presented to Adam Boyle, Tony Compton and Jillian Kemp.

In other basketball news, the Mustangs will host the under-20 national championships and the Ivor Berge championships, which is for basketballers with an intellectual disability, in February next year.
