KEITH HOPING FOR THIRD TIME LUCK

Emily Keith hopes it is a case of third time lucky when she attends the NSW All Schools basketball trials in Sydney on Monday.

The 17-year-old will bring up a hat-trick of Combined Independent Schools (CIS) representation for open girls’ basketball next week but Keith will be out to take the next step in her final shot at the school system.

Keith, a year 12 student at Hunter Valley Grammar School (HVGS), has fallen short of state selection in this code despite prior success with the equivalent NSW All Schools netball squad.

And after missing last year’s trials with a shoulder injury Keith, a member of the Maitland Mustangs youth squad, said she was proceeding with caution but remained keen to make up for lost time.

“I started playing CIS opens [basketball] in year 9 but I was injured in year 11,” Keith said.

“This is my last year and I have made [NSW] All Schools for netball before but not basketball so it would be nice to make it this year.

“I’m not at my peak yet [after my injury], physically I’m fine but the hardest thing is having that confidence in myself again.”

Last week it was fellow HVGS students Amy Lewis and Bianca Green making their mark at the NSW Primary School Sports Association basketball championships in Sydney.

The pair helped CIS to third overall from the 14 competing teams, an improvement of one place from last year.

Both are involved in Maitland Mustangs under-14 representative squads and have a NSW Country all stars camp in August
