This thanksgiving weekend sees the Montreal Angels make the trip up the 40 to our nation’s capital for the 2013 Women’s Canadian National Championships. Here, along with seven other women’s aussie rules footy teams, the Montreal Angels will go to battle to see who can be crowned the best footy team in Canada.
The Montreal Angels are reigning champions and this is a title they will not want to lose. Over the last two months the Angels have been training and recruiting intensively, to the extent that they will travel to Ottawa with enough players to field an 18 a side team if so required. However this tournament will be based on a 12 a side format something head coach Aimee Legault has been working on over the last two months or so.
Key to Legaults plans will be older sister Margo Legault and fellow AFL Quebec and Montreal Angel stalwarts Lindsay Belzie and Mimi Eboka. All three are fantastic footy players in their rights but it is their experience that may well be a deciding factor in Angel’s success. With so many new recruits, it will be up to Legault, Eboka and Belzie to show them how the game should be played and lead the troops to glory.
The Angels were dealt a massive boost with the surprise late inclusion of Kate Allbon Sargeant who was MIA for much of the year. Her timely return to the game will be massive for the Angels. Along with Elaine Gilmore, Veronique Chasse and Louise Mclean the Angels will have a forward line well capable of kicking goals. Add to that the marking capabilities of Robyn Graham and the Angels have a potent forward line capable of doing a lot of damage.
The Angels defense isn’t too shabby either. Marshalled by the above mentioned Eboka, the defense will comprise of the tough tackling Tara Cools Lartigue, Autumn Ervine and Emily Legault. Goals against these will be hard come by for any team.
First year rookies Kylie McIlwaine and Sarah Warden have been nothing short of impressive since jumping on the footy band wagon and have taken to the oval ball like a duck to water. So impressive have they been, except both to feature on ball at more than one stage throughout the weekend. With them on ball will be seasoned campaigner Legault, lone aussie star Jane Fenelon and Team Canada ‘s Kelsey Martin. Martin is growing in stature every time she takes to the footy field and expect her to take this tournament by storm. All big names and all capable of been catalysts for an Angels success.
To see how the Angels do then make your way to the Rideau Carleton Raceway both this Saturday and Sunday for what promises to be a big weekend of Women Aussie Rules Football.
