The Colac Kookas downed Portland to claim their first win of the Country Basketball League season.

THE Colac Kookas have survived a nail-biting finish to record their first win of the Country Basketball League season.

The Kookas led by nine points heading into the final term against Portland before the Coasters threatened to steal victory.

Portland outscored Colac 19 to 11 in last quarter but missed a shot in the dying seconds to hand the Kookas a memorable 70-69 win.

“It was a pretty tight finish, they started to push it inside in the last quarter after we’d lost some big blokes,” Kookas’ co-coach Matt Lucas said.

“We maybe rushed it a little bit, we probably could have used the clock a bit better but we held on and it’s good to get the first win on the board,” he said.

The return of key tall Nathan Lemke, 14 points, was a big boost for the team which had lacked height in previous weeks.

Marcus Larcombe led the Kookas’ scoring for the fourth straight game with 25 points and played a big part in Colac’s effective transition-style play.

Nathan Lemke’s return bolstered the Colac Kookas.
