COLAC’S youngest representative basketballers hope to claim their first grand final after falling short the past two tournaments.

The Kookas’ under-12 boys’ and girls’ basketball squads will leave for Shepparton today for the three-day Victoria Country Basketball Championships.

Girls’ coach Shane Howard said his team had improved during the summer and would chase its first grand final win this weekend.

“In the first tournament at Warrnambool we won one game and got close in a few and then we finished runner-up at Hamilton and Colac so the improvement has definitely been there,” he said.

“I’m confident the girls will equip themselves, but as long as they enjoy themselves I’m happy.”

Howard’s team takes on Swan Hill at 11am tomorrow and faces matches against Morwell and Castlemaine before the championship round on Monday.

Colac’s under-14 representative teams have their country championships at Ballarat on April 14
