The Frank Ponta Cup 2011

The inaugural Frank Ponta Cup was held at the AIS Canberra in 2010 to provide quality games and the opportunity for players from around Australia to play at their classification. The tournament also provides the opportunity for coaches to hone their skills in a more competitive setting.  This year, along with the 4 NWBL coaches, 8 development coaches attended expanding coaching experience around the country. The tournament also offers  referees and officials the opportunity to take control of games in a competitive environment and continue their education.

Over two weekends in March and April each year four teams compete for the Frank Ponta Cup.  The teams are named after four of the captains from the Australian men’s team program
• John Turich - Inaugural captain of the Australian men’s wheelchair basketball team
• Sandy Blythe - Co Captain of the 1996 Atlanta gold medal winning team. .
• David Gould - Co Captain of the 1996 Atlanta gold medal winning team.
• Brad Ness - Captain of the 2008 Beijing gold medal team and the 2010 World Championship winning team.

This year’s tournament also included the Gliders, as they prepare for the World Under 25 world championships for women, and also the London Paralympic games.

The winning team for 2011 was David Gould which included two Rollerblaze players Mathew McShane and Jamie Stewart.
