Under 18 Boys Runners up at Country Champs

18 boys runners up at Bendigo

We headed to Bendigo with only 7 players.  It was going to be a tough weekend with the potential for 6 games of basketball in 36 hours.

Game 1 vs Hamilton.  This was a Warrnambool Tournament Grand Final
re-m atch.  We trailed for the whole game coming within 4 points, eventually losing by 6 pts.
Highest Scorers:  Josh Prendergast 12, David McPhee 9

Game 2 vs Moe
We battled in this game, it was a hard game and we battled with a small bench, at half time we were within 8 points only to be blown away in the second half as we were unable to maintain the intensity against a much taller team. Eventually succumbing to a loss of 35 points.
Highest Scorers: Josh Prendergast & David McPhee 11, Jack Benjamin & Ryder Woods 7.

Game 3 vs Bandits
This game saw a record number of fouls called on us. We had Jed, Ryder & Jack all fouled off with still 5 mins to play leaving us with 4 players.  Once again outclassed by tall players and a large bench.
Highest Scorers: Josh Prendergast 12, Jack Benjamin & Ryder Woods 6.

Quarter Final Crossover vs Foster
Despite the early 7.30am start, the boys arrived with renewed energy and a determination to secure a win. At half time we led by 8 points. Losing Jed to 5 fouls with 6 mins remaining was difficult leaving us with Ryder as the only tall.  The boys continued to play hard and walked away with a 13 pt win. A very happy bunch of boys. (and coaches)
Highest Scorers: Josh Prendergast 12, Ryder Woods 11, Jack Benjamin 7.

Semi Final vs Echuca
The starting 5 of David, Josh, Jack, Jed & Ryder went out on to the court and began playing a game that we hadn’t seen them play all weekend. Within 3 mins the score was 8-0 and Echucas coach was screaming for a timeout. With subs of James & Kyle we continued to drive the Pirates mad. We led all the way and finished off with a well earnt 10point win and a berth in the Div 4 Grand Final
Highest Scorers: Jack Benjamin 11, David McPhee & Ryder Woods 10.

Grand Final vs Southern Peninsula
This was the bonus game that we had worked hard for all weekend.  A team of quite tall boys who were highly defensive. 17 turnovers hurt us, although 18 defensive & 16 offensive rebounds were the highest of the weekend. We trailed the whole game, we bought the margin back to 3 points close to the end but just couldn’t mange to close it further eventually losing by 8 points.
Highest Scorers: Ryder Woods 11, Jack Benjamin & Josh Prendergast 10.

A very pleasing weekends games, the boys adapted well to having two players short. They played roles they haven’t done before and each and every player gave their all for the good of the team.  The team play exhibited on the court was fantastic.  After a slow start on Saturday, a very pleasing result in the end.  A lot of positives will be taken into the season commencing on Friday.

Well Done Boys
