Hi Footy Heads, what an amazing round of Preliminary Finals!
We saw the Rebels go out in straight sets with a tight loss to the Hawks, while the Blues ran all over the Swans in an upset at RCR in Division 1. But the Swans ladies were able to get the job done with a solid win over the Blues.
All in all, some hard games of footy were played and some amazing Grand Finals coming up this weekend. Here is my review from the weekend
Hawks 7.6.48 def Rebels 6.3.39
A tough game of footy and the only one on the day in Toronto, the heat was on early with a lot of hard hitting from both sides. The Hawks got out to an early lead but it was the second quarter where they put the footy down and went to a 28 point lead at half time after keeping the Rebels scoreless.
The Rebels then came out in the third quarter and kicked 5 goals but it was a goal against the tide to the Hawks that ensured they maintained their lead by a slender 4 points going into the final break.
The last quarter was as hard hitting as ever with a lot of back and forth. The Rebels couldn't manage more than 1 behind in the last while the Hawks kicked one late in the game to seal the deal.
Shutts kicked 3 for the winners while Cragg and Dullard kicked 2 each. Major goal kickers for the Rebels were Burns and King.
Phantom Prediction - 1/1 and only a point off the margin!
Blues 9.6.60 def Swans 3.11.29
After threatening in Toronto, the rain really came down in the Nation's Capital and with it, washed away the Swans dreams of playing in a Grand Final. Some might even say they played their Grand Final the week before and underestimated the Blues!
After a tight first quarter in which the Swans couldn't convert, the Blues came out in the second quarter and kicked 3.1 to 1 goal and never looked back. The Swans inaccurate kicking really let them down but they also were second to the ball which resulted in a sound defeat.
Harcombe was best for the Swans and one of their few goal kickers while Chopper and Davis kicked 2 each for the Blues with Doc featuring in the best as normal.
Phantom Prediction - 1/2 in Div 1 #AFLOFinals
Women's Division
Swans 5.3.33 def Blues 2.6.18
The top of the table Swans clearly didn't have the same rust on them this week as the previous, as the ladies secured a birth in their first Grand Final with a solid win over the Blues.
Dickinson had 2 goals and Aimee Legault 1 in a game that could have gone against them if the Blues had kicked straighter. Both sides finished with 8 scoring shots!
Congratulations Swans on making the Grand Final, and well done Blues for a much improved season.
Phantom Prediction - 1/1 in Women's Div #AFLOFinals - again only 1 point off the margin
That's it for this week, Footy Heads! Only one to go, and expecting to see a great weekend of footy in Toronto on Saturday!
