Hello Footy Heads and welcome to the Round 7 review!
A big round of footy in Ontario, with some big winning margins to match. The lowest margin was 32 points which in itself is actually a good win normally speaking.
Thank you to those who provided their match reports and votes, here is my review of the weekends games.
Blues 18.12.120 def Roos 8.9.57
The Blues came to play on Friday night and absolutely smashed the Roos at Humber South with almost double the scoring shots. Without Lake the Roos hole in midfield was wide open and despite JR and Cuzner kicking 4 each, they just didn't have the numbers to compete.
The Blues were out in force and despite missing Daws had many multiple goal kickers. The main one being Shorty with 7 while Willsy had 3 and Doc 2. Vossy had a good game as did Chopper.
Phantom starts #AFLOrd7 with a correct pick.
Rebels 14.18.102 def Demons 1.5.11
The Rebels came out this week and played a big first half putting the Demons away pretty quickly. Lead by Karavias with a 7 goal BOG performance, they lead by 9 goals to none at half time and despite only kicking 1 goal in the 3rd went on to win by 15 goals. Some more accurate kicking and it could have been a lot worse!
While fairly competitive at times, it was a pretty lacklustre performance by the Demons, they were missing Loughnane and Doggett but besides that had basically everyone in. Even Casey couldn't kick a goal last week, Ireland their lone goal kicker.
Phantom 2/2.
Gargoyles 11.13.79 def Eagles 6.11.47
As usual the Eagles have nothing to report so am going to give them no love. Minaker, Sauce and Luisser in their best but they were soundly defeated by the Gargoyles and will need to do more to earn a place in September.
The Gargoyles came to Toronto ready to go and knowing they need some wins before August. O'Reagan kicked goals again snagging 3 while Dyer had 2. Smith, McQuoid and Flip in their best players they comfortably ran over the Eagles.
Phantom 3/3
Dingos 14.9.93 def Hawks 5.5.35
With some of their best players out of town and others unavailable, the Hawks numbers were extremely low to say the least. To the Dingos credit, they match at 16 a side which would have opened things up quite at bit at U of T. Never in it with a shot, the Hawks put up a bit of a fight but the Dingos were not going to miss an opportunity to steal a big win when they really needed it.
Wells kicked 5 for the Dingos, an impressive effort for a back man and makes me wonder who was marking him... Willis? Turner Bloom and Humphries kicked 2 each but it was Aitken who was everywhere for the Dingos as they ruined my potential perfect round.
Phantom 3/4 in Round 7.
Swans 13.17.95 def Wildcats 4.7.35
The Wildcats travelled up to the Nation's Capital slightly short for a tough match agains the up and about Swans. Despite the low numbers, they fought it out hard and while coming away with a loss will probably not be the biggest losers in Ottawa this summer. Kitney kicked 2 goals while Lowry and Sherwood pitched in with 1 each.
The Swans didn't kick all that straight but still had a good performance and continued to show improvement. Powell kicked 5 goals and a number of behinds (not bad for an old guy) while Kozlowski and Stafford had 2 goals each.
Phantom finishing Round 7 with 4 correct picks.
2XU Player of the Round
Congratulations to the Round 7 Division 1 Player of the Round Kon Karavias on the Toronto Rebels. A 7 goal haul and Best on Ground performance, he's been playing very well all year and last week against the Demons was no exception.
Womens
Blues 7.6.48 def Roos 4.4.28
The drought is OVER! The Ladies at the Central Blues Footy Club have finally got 4 points on the board after some tough times in their recent history. A big 20 point win over the Roos shows just how open this women's comp really is. The Blues Kelly-Witt kicked 2 goals while Bennett, Grant and Nicholls were among their best.
The Roos were disappointed to let this one slip. Madison Amaral kicked 2 goals while her sister Selena was judged best on ground. Maybe a couple more Amaral's would have got the win for the Roos?
Phantom 0/1 but well done Blues with the win!
Swans 3.11.29 def Wildcats 3.6.24
Following a loss to the Wildcats in Hamilton the week before, the Swans were quick to enact revenge with a 5 point win over the Cats at home on Saturday. Their numbers were huge but it was the twin towers of Dickinson and Legault who were the best afield for the Swans while Martin kicked 2 of the 3 goals.
The Wildcats numbers were not quite as strong but they put up a solid fight and were not far off a sneaky win. Fluit their best and main goal kicker with 2 goals.
Phantom 1/2 in the Women's competition
That's it for #AFLOrd7, Footy Heads. See you in a few days!
