Hi Footy Heads, with #AFLOrd5 now officially complete the ladder is really starting to take shape and we see the Rebels as only undefeated team in the competition.
Below them we have the Hawks and Roos with one loss a piece, followed by the Swans who had a great win in Toronto - can they keep it up and sneak a home final?
The Gargoyles, Demons, Eagles and Blues sit just below them with 2 wins each meaning a wide open competition. The jury is still on out the Dingos at the moment, with only 1 win they really need to make some inroads over the next few weeks. The Wildcats are winless on the bottom and look set for a second wooden spoon in a rebuilding year.
Round 5 had a lot of action spread over two weekends, so now everyone has basically had a weekend off the next month is going to be very exciting. This next month could make or break seasons for a couple of sides so I expect to see the best possible numbers taking the field for all teams. Here is my review of #AFLOrd5
Rebels 13.5.83 def Roos 6.8.44
This Friday night top of the table clash between the only two undefeated sides was expected to be a hard hitting affair and its safe to say it was exactly that. Both sides came out of the blocks hard and it was the Rebels who made the most of their opportunities kicking 3.2 to the Roos 0.4. The Roos kicked one early in the second but the Rebels won the second quarter as well going into the half time break with a 16 point lead.
The game opened up a lot in the second half and the premiership quarter was when the Rebels really put the foot down kicking 4.2 to 1.3 and leading the Roos by 33 points at the final change. They went on to win the final quarter as well to win by 39 points. The Rebels best was Murdoch with 4 goals, along with Karavias with 4 also. Studham had 2 for the Roos and their best was AJ and Morkel.
Rebels now have a nice big target on their backs.
Phantom starts #AFLOrd5 with a win - 1/1.
Eagles 10.4.64 def 6.9.45
Two sides desperate to get wins on the board hit it out early Saturday morning and it seems the old legs of the Eagles work best when they just got out of bed. They jumped the Dingos with a 4 goals to 1 first quarter and the second quarter was much of the same as the Eagles lead by 40 points at the major break.
But the Dingos then managed to keep the Eagles scoreless in the 3rd as the old legs began to tire and the Dingo dogs began sniffing around for an upset. But they lacked forward presence and more to the point accuracy and despite having more scoring shots, ended the game with a 19 point loss.
Best players for the Eagles were Kennedy, Minaker and Llewellyn while Falcioni finished the game with 5 kicks, 0 handballs, and 5 goals.
Meanwhile the Dingos were well represented by Aitken, McKay, Bell and Tinks. Missing Big Wade up front and the Frequent Flyer Evans.
Phantom 1 from 2.
Blues 17.17.119 def Wildcats 4.6.30
After 3 consecutive losses, the Blues really needed a win to this Round to keep their finals aspirations well and truly alive while the Wildcats continued the hunt for their first victory. McDowall played lights out all day and is really showing some great leadership at the club. He was backed by Visser and Eli while Sherwood continues to show great improvement and finishing with 2 goals.
The Blues were missing Daws and Wills but still managed to create many scoring opportunities from which Chopper capitalized most. He kicked 10 after an alleged big Friday night, but it was Doc again who was best afield with 2 goals and a dominant performance.
Phantom 2 from 3
Hawks 19.13.127 def Demons 8.2.50
If anyone doubted the Hawks after their first loss of the season, you were stupid. A huge win over the Demons last weekend at U of T without Dullard and Killa in the line up just shows why they are still the team to beat. Not sure what happened to the Dees, I couldn't make it to this one and check out all the Rogers action but they appear to have a full line up on paper - no report has been received by either team at time of writing.
Cragg kicked a handy 7 goals and Stirling 4 as Forrest was judged best on with Shutts close behind him.
Demons goals were kicked by Casey and Farrelly with 3 each while Anjou pitched in with 2.
Phantom 3 from 4
Swans 11.7.73 def Gargoyles 6.6.42
The annual "Canada Day Cup" game between the Swans and Gargoyles was moved this year from its traditional RCR to Humber South in a hard hitting affair in which the Swans came ready to play. They got the jump on the Gargoyles early with three goals to one in the first. First in for the ball and moving well, they played the bigger ground well. Stafford led the way for the Swans with a 3 goals best on ground performance, supported by Powell, Bridges and Strom with 2 goals each.
The Gargoyles skipper Millen led the charge as always and was their best while Dyer was back in with 2 goals and Kerm kicked 4. Probably should have been more. They were bitterly disappointed with the loss, the slow start really cost them.
Big win for the Swans on the road as the Canada Cup travelled back up the 401 to the Capital.
Phantom finished 3 from 5.
2XU Player of the Round
This weeks Division 1 2XU Player of the Round is Kyle 'Doc' Docherty from the Central Blues. Probably a little unlucky not to have won an award already this season, the Doc has had a great season so far and Saturday was no exception. He kicked 2 goals in the Blues win over the Wildcats but it was his hard work all over the ground that got him the award. Congratulations Doc
Womens
Wildcats 5.6.36 def Blues 1.2.8
The lone Women's Division game in #AFLOrd5 saw a big win for the Wildcats in a hard fought battle, played at 15 aside and full field for Rogers TV. The Blues are still hunting their maiden victory of the AFL Ontario season and their only goal for the day was kicked by Nichols.
The Wildcats haven't entered anything into Sporting Pulse but I know the Commoli kicked at least 2 goals and had a great game. Strong team performance by the Wildcats.
Phantom without a winner in Women's.
