BASKETBALL MAJOR WINNERS AT NT SPORTS AWARDS

Basketball can rightfully claim to be one of the premier sports on the Northern Territory landscape after the announcement of the winners at the NT Sport Awards on Saturday night.

The Tracy Village Jets Women were recognised with the  Local Performance of the Year award for their outstanding performances in 2016 going through the year undefeated and claiming both Challenge and Champions seasons championships in the DBA in 2016.  Their amazing performance over the preceding 4 years were also recognised as part of the award as they were mentioned as one of the "greatest female sports teams in NT sporting history" on the night.

Abby Cubillo was awarded the NT Junior Sportsperson of the year for the second year running for her outstanding acheivements in 2016 which saw her collect a gold medal with the U17 Sapphiers - the first NT Basketball Female World Champion.  Abby continues her second year on scholarship at Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence at the AIS in Canberra and is currently in the U19 Women's World Championship squad after they successfully qualified for the World Championships in impressive fashion winning a gold medal at the Oceania Qulaifiers in Fiji in 2016.

To top the night off Tom-O'Neill Thorne was awarded the 2017 NT Sportsperson of the Year award!  Tom was a member of the Rollers Senior Men's Team that finished 6th at the Paralympics in 2016.  Tom was also named as Captain of the Australian under 23 Mens Team in 2016 - the first time ever a Territory basketballer has been named Captain of an Australian representative basketball team!

BASKETBALL NT IS VERY PROUD OF ALL OF OUR TERRITORY BASKETBALL ATHLETES AND TEAMS AND IT WAS GREAT TO HAVE THEM RECOGNISED AT THE PREMIER AWARDS CEREMONY FOR SPORT IN THE NT.  CONGRATULATIONS ON BEHALF OF ALL LOVERS OF BASKETBALL IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY!!!!!!
