Soccer truly is a game that everyone can play

It is hard enough to run, dribble, pass and tackle in soccer no matter how talented the player, but image how difficult all those skills required to master the great game of soccer are when completely blind.

Meet 4 year old Taio, who turns 5 in December. When registration dates were announced for the 2018 season, Taio had only one thing on his mind – to play the same game that his brothers and sisters enjoyed when they were at preschool.

Taio has lost his full vision from a brain tumour that damaged his optic nerve, which now cannot be repaired. In March 2017 Taio had surgery to remove the tumour, but unfortunately it grew back quickly and in May 2017 he had surgery again to remove it. Following his second surgery Taio then underwent radiation therapy to try and stop the tumour from returning.

The loss of vision is not the only thing that has affected Taio, it has also caused him to have adrenal insufficiency, diabetes insipidus and other medical issues. These issues will mean that Taio will be on multiple medications for the rest of his life with ongoing medical appointments and tests required to monitor his progress.

“I was worried if Taio being able to play soccer could happen and was preparing myself to be told no” said Dallas Taylor (Taio’s Mum).

“I could not be happier with the response and attitude of everyone at Parkes Soccer. Everyone has gone out of their way to make sure Taio has the best experience possible, including purchasing a soccer ball that beeps so that Taio knows where it is” said Dallas.

President of Parkes Soccer, Kevin Medlyn said, “We want to be a sport in Parkes that is truly open to everyone to play no matter what your gender or ability is” he explained.

“Seeing Taio take the field each Saturday and enjoying this great game truly brings a smile to all of our faces” he said.

When asked, Taio said that his favourite part about soccer is running around and the beeping ball.
