AFL Canada will partner with the Williamstown Football Club for the upcoming International Cup – placing the Northern Lights and Northwind in strong positions for on field success.
The Canadian sides will have access to all of the VFL club’s training facilities at Burbank Oval including their ground, ice baths, spa, and meeting rooms.
Importantly, the teams will have four hours of access each day in the week lead up to the competition, giving the players a chance to gel in high-quality facilities.
Northern Lights coach Jason Arnold said it would give the teams a strategic advantage.
“We're thrilled to have the support of Williamstown FC. For both teams to have access to the amazing facilities will be an incredible asset both in the lead up and throughout the event,” he said.
“This allows us to reinforce the key strategies together that we've been working on in small groups across the country to this point. We will have meeting rooms for each line coach and a theatre room for the team to discuss our game plan.
“Five games in 13 days is a tough schedule. Access to the facilities post games allows us to treat any player's injuries in a professional manner and give them the best chance of being available for the next game.”
Williamstown has Canadian links prior this association, with coaching director Murray Fielding and former assistant coach Mark Peterson helping coach the Northern Lights to the 2014 International Cup title.
Williamstown Football Club CEO Jason Reddick said the connection with the Canadian sides was a mutually beneficial arrangement.
“Our club has a strategic focus to be involved with an international team on a long-term basis,” he said.
“Doing so, will further endorse our commitment to growing the AFL footprint and in-turn, grow our club’s brand.”
AFL Canada president Lachlan Griffiths said it was a great opportunity for Canadian players to experience professional facilities.
“Some of the grounds where our players train and play for their local clubs here in Canada don't have as much as a drink fountain, so for them to be training at a VFL club will be a fantastic experience and help them prepare to be at their best for their games,” he said.
