Team Canada’s men and women travel to Australia to take on the world for the chance to be crowned Australian Football Champions
This week Canadian men and women travel half way around the world to Sydney, Australia to compete against 19 other countries for a chance to be crowned Australian Football International Cup Champions.
The 2011 Australian International Cup (IC11), is the fourth event of its kind and will be held in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia from August 12th to 27th. Team Canada has played in all four International Cups culminating in a top six finish in 2008 for the men. With the incredible growth of women’s football around the world, Canada will be one of five women’s teams playing for the title this time round.
Australian Football has been played in Canada for 22 years and features one of the largest men’s and junior’s leagues outside of Australia. Leagues are based in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and Ottawa. Over the last five years football in Canada has been in double-digit growth primarily driven by the increased participation of women playing the sport. AFLC (Australian Football League Canada) is the governing body
of the sport in Canada. Our volunteers, members and the AFLC Executive has worked hard to grow the sport by focussing on the development of annual international playing opportunities with our American partners, junior development around our largest leagues in Vancouver and Toronto, and supporting the growth of new clubs and leagues. This sport is grown by passionate and highly dedicated volunteers that give so much of their time for the love of the game, says Darrel Perry AFLC President.
Team Canada is ranked sixth in the world for the men and third for women. Canada plays its first games on August 13th in Sydney with the final played on August 27th in Melbourne, Australia.
