The tentative 2012 grades have taken into account :
  • The tentative 2012 grades have taken into account the automatic promotion/relegation from the 2011 season.
  • The teams from within a club have been renumbered to reflect the numerical order for the new season.

2012 Competition Format

Premier, Premier Reserve and Senior Grade Dates and Format

Round 1

21 April to 9 June (7 weeks)

Challenge Round (Round 2)

16 June to 30 June(3weeks)

Championship Round (Round 3)

7 July to 1 September (9 weeks)

Round 1 – (Saturday 21 April-Saturday 9 June)

The season begins with three Premier grades, four Premier Reserve grades, four Senior 1 grades and all remaining teams in the Senior 2 grades. Each Premier and Premier Reserve grade are made up of 8 teams; The Senior grades are made up of 6, 7 or 8 teams in each section. Each of these grades will play a round robin in the first round, with the top two teams automatically promoted to the grade above at the end of that round, and the bottom two teams are automatically relegated to the grade below. The exceptions to this are:

  • The top Premier 2 teams won't face automatic promotion/relegation.
  • Senior Grades made up of 6 teams, will only have promotion/relegation of one team. The numbers in each grade will be confirmed after the conclusion of the Senior Grading Day.

Premier 1

After Round 1, the top six Premier 1 teams qualify for the Regional Super League (RSL) administered by Netball Wellington Region, and will no longer take part in the Netball Wellington Centre competition for 2012. The team leading the Premier 1 points table after Round 1, will be declared the Premier 1 winners for 2012.

The updated Regional Super League rules will be forwarded to Premier 1 clubs, once they are finalised and received from Netball Wellington Region.

Challenge Round – Round 2 (Saturday 16 June – Saturday 30 June)

The three week challenge round is for all grades except for Division 1, which forms between the remaining Premier 1 teams and the Premier 2 teams after promotion/relegation has been taken into account. The Challenge Round enables a further opportunity earlier in the season for additional promotion/relegation, with the exception of Division 1. The Challenge Round consists of a quarter final, semi final and final type format. The seeding for these games are based on the final positions of teams at the conclusion of Round 1, and after the automatic promotion/relegation is implemented. ALL teams will play in each of the three weeks of the Challenge Round, regardless of results. The winner of the final in each grade will be promoted (see Senior 1A and College 1A exception below) and the bottom placed team in each team will be relegated.

The bottom team in Premier Reserve 4 at the end of the Challenge Round will be automatically relegated for the Championship Round (Round 3). The winner of Senior 1A and the winner of Collegiate 1A at the end of the Challenge Round will be play off for the right for promotion into Premier Reserve 4 for the Championship Round. This game will be played on the same day as the Challenge Round final.

Week 1: Quarter-finals

1 v 6, 2 v 5, 3 v 8, and 4 v 7 (1 and 2 down from grade above; 7 and 8 up from grade below through automatic promotion/relegation). The winners will proceed to Semi-finals and losers to seeding games.

Week 2: Top four - Promotion

Bottom Four – Relegation

Winner 1 v 6 v Winner 3 v 8

Winner 2 v 5 v Winner 4 v 7

Loser 1 v 6 versus Loser 3 v 8;

Loser 2 v 5 versus Loser 4 v 7

The Challenge Round format for grades which have less than 8 teams, will be confirmed, once the Round 1 draw is compiled.

Championship Round – Division 1 Only - Round 2 (16 June – 1 September)

The Division 1 grade will consist of the two Premier 1 teams remaining in the Centre competition at the conclusion of Round 1, plus the top six Premier 2 teams and the two newly promoted teams from Premier 3.

As Division 1 has one less game, their will be a split round over two weekends in July, date to be confirmed at a later date.

Week 1

Semi-finals

Game 1 – 1 v 4 Game 2 – 2 v 3

Game 3 – 5 v 8 Game 4 – 6 v 7

Game 5 – 9 v 10 (9th and 10th play-off game)

Week 2

7th and 8th play-off

Winner Game 3 v Winner Game 4

Loser Game 3 v Loser Game 4

It is expected that the top two Division 1 teams will be promoted for 2013, while the bottom team will be relegated. This will be dependent on any changes regionally to the competitions. Only ONE team is relegated in all grades from Div 1 down at the end of the championship as only ONE team is promoted.

Championship Round - Round 3 (7 July to 1 September)

In the Championship Round, all teams will play a further round robin, followed by semi finals and a final (in all grades) and play-off games (in some grades). All Premier and Premier Reserve Grade teams will play both final games for promotion/relegation and/or seeding for 2013, while only the Senior grade teams playing in the semi finals and final will play.

The play-off format will be:

Week 1

Game 3 – 5 v 8 Game 4 – 6 v 7

Week 2

7th and 8th play-off

Winner Game 1 v Winner Game 2

Loser Game 1 v Loser Game 2

Winner Game 3 v Winner Game 4

Loser Game 3 v Loser Game 4

The final teams in each Premier and Premier Reserve Grade will be playing off for promotion for the 2013 winter season, while the 7th and 8th Play-off will be playing off for relegation for the 2013 winter season.

Collegiate Grades

The 2012 season will see the amended format introduced in 2011 continued. This was designed to help grade teams and ensure the number of ‘one sided’ games is kept to a minimum earlier in the season.

Round 1

5 May to 9 June (5 weeks)

Challenge Round (Round 2)

16 June to 30 June (3 weeks)

Championship Round (Round 3)

21 July to 1 September(7 weeks)

School Holidays – No Play

7 July & 14 July

Public Holiday – No Play

2 June (Queens Birthday Weekend)

Round 1 (5 weeks starting on 5 May); Each Collegiate Grade will be split into 8 teams, ie 8 teams in each of College 1, College 2 etc.

  • Round 1 will double as the first round and a grading competition.
  • Each grade will be split into two pools of four teams with each team in the pool playing each other.
  • The Grade will then be split into the ‘top 4 and bottom 4’ based, with the top two from each pool entering the ‘top 4’ and bottom two entering the ‘bottom 4’.
  • The groups top and bottom four teams will play a semi-final and final. This is weather dependent if playing outdoors at the Hataitai Netball Courts and Netball Wellington Centre reserves the right to modify the format to ensure appropriate grading.
  • The top Collegiate 1 team at the end of Round 1 will be promoted to Premier Reserve 4.
  • The remainder of teams will be graded by NWC at the conclusion of Round 1.

Challenge Round - Round 2 (Saturday 16 June – Saturday 30 June)

The Collegiate Challenge Round will follow the same format as for Premier, Premier Reserve and Senior Grades (see above – pages 2 & 3) with eight teams in each grade. At the conclusion of the Challenge Round, the top and bottom team in each grade will be promoted or relegated in seeding for the next round. NWC reserves the right to promote/relegate teams as required.

Championship Round - Round 3 (Saturday 21 July – Saturday 1 September)

Once teams are reseeded after the Challenge Round, all Collegiate Grades will revert to six teams to allow for School Holidays. In the Championship Round, all teams will play a further round robin, followed by semi finals and a final between the top four placed teams
