Basketball Australia appoint Jackie Lauff as Inclusion Officer

Sports CONNECT is a national framework that aims to build sustainable pathways for people with disabilities to get involved in sport and physical activity by creating and developing relationships between sports and disability organisations.

Lauff has recently returned to Australia after completing post-graduate studies in Adapted Physical Activity in Belgium and Norway and working with the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education in Berlin, Germany. An Occupational Therapist and former able-bodied player in the Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League, she brings a wealth of experience from event management and sport development roles in NSW, ACT and VIC.

Michael Haynes, General Manager of Community Basketball said, “This is a really positive step forward for Basketball Australia to build on the fantastic international success of our Australian basketballers with a disability and develop much needed structured pathways for grassroots development.”

Her main responsibilities are to provide leadership and oversee the development and implementation of programs that provide sustainable opportunities to participate in basketball for people with physical, intellectual/integration difficulties and sensory disabilities.

“It’s my passion to create opportunities in local communities for people with disabilities to play sport and be active both in Australia and in the region. To be able to do that with my favourite sport is really amazing” Lauff said.

Lauff joined the Community Basketball team last week and arrives in Melbourne today to attend a Sports CONNECT National Sport Organisation Forum at the MCG along with representatives from 22 different National Sports Organisations.

Basketball was one of the first six pilot sports to join Sports CONNECT in 2003 and is the third National Sports Organisation to appoint an Inclusion Officer, following Swimming and Tennis.

With this new appointment, we can expect further developments in inclusive administration, development and competition to provide the best possible opportunities for basketball players with a disability in every state and territory.
