Gliders Bounce Back to Crush Peru

The Australian Gliders women’s wheelchair basketball national team recorded their first win of the 2014 IWBF Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championships, thrashing Peru 90-10 in Canada today.

Coming off a hard-fought defeat to the USA in their opening game of the tournament, the Gliders bounced back in convincing fashion, making light work of the South Americans.

Kathleen O’Kelly-Kennedy top-scored for the Australians, posting a game-high 25 points on 12-of-17 shooting to go with seven rebounds and four assists.

The shooting performance of O’Kelly-Kennedy reflected the improved output of the entire team, hitting at 62% from the field in the 80-point demolition.

Bridie Kean was again impressive, posting a near triple-double of 10 points, six rebounds and eight assists, while Leanna Del Toso (15 points on 7-of-10 FG) and Cobi Crispin (12 points on 6-of-7 FG) also followed up strong games against the USA.

It was one-way traffic from the outset, with the Gliders establishing a 22-point lead by the end of the first quarter, leading 26-4. This was the only occasion Peru would score multiple baskets in a quarter.

The lead went past 40 points at the main interval, with the defensive efforts of the Gliders equally as impressive as their scoring prowess. After half time the margin continued to grow, with the Gliders not allowing Peru the opportunity settle into the contest.

Next up for the Australian Gliders is France on Monday at 12:00am AEST, with fans able to watch the game LIVE online at http://2014wheelchairbasketball.com/connect/watch-the-games-live.
