Victoria Bounce Back to Claim Bronze

Victoria have bounced back to win the 2013 WNWBL bronze medal after a 59-42 victory over the Sydney Uni Flames.

The Vics got the jump on the Flames after a huge 24-8 first quarter, Leanne Del Toso scoring 10 of those herself. The Flames came out after quarter time and made a game of it. Their defence tightened up and their scoring started to flow but they just weren’t able to make any inroads into Victoria’s lead.

Del Toso capped off a tremendous finals series with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Alice Hammond saved her best for last posting a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Melanie Domaschenz was outstanding at both ends of the floor all weekend.

For the Flames, Sarah Stewart was the dominant players with 34 points and 15 rebounds and it was great to see Caitlin de Wit hit the scoreboard with 6 points and 6 assists.

The Flames finish their season in fourth place while after back to back Championships in 2011 and 2012 the Victorians will have to settle with bronze.

Congratulations to both teams on a tremendous season.

With the bronze medal game done and dusted, all that’s left for WNWBL season 2013 is the gold medal game between the Stacks Goudkamp Bears and Be Active Western Stars.
