Stars Keep Season Alive After Extinguishing Flames
The Be Active Western Stars will face Victoria in Saturday night’s preliminary final after getting past the Sydney Uni Flames in tonight’s second semi-final 66-34.
The Stars asserted their dominance early with a 16-6 opening quarter, 12 of those coming from Amber Merritt. She had 19 by the end of the first half but had plenty of help from her Stars teammates.
The Flames found their range at the beginning of the third quarter and started to chip away at the lead. The vocal home ground did all they could to keep the Flames alight, and to their credit, the Flames never gave in. Sarah Stewart has been brilliant all year but was outscored in this one by teammate Katie Hill (14 points).
In the end the Stars just had a bit too much polish for the Flames. Amber Merritt finished just four assists short of a triple-double (32 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists). Amanda Nott had 16, Georgia Inglis wasn’t afraid to pull the trigger adding 8 of her own and Mandy Bonavita wound back the clock also scoring 8 points.
They’ll face minor premiers Victoria in Saturday’s preliminary final with the prize, a place in the 2013 WNWBL Championships Game.
