Round 1: Day 1 Wrap

After an almost 12 month hiatus, the wait was finally over as the Women's National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL) tipped of in Sydney in Round 1 action.

Game 1: Stacks Goudkamp Bears v Minecraft Comets

In the opening game of the WNWBL the Bears demonstrated exactly why they are being described by many as the team to beat in 2013. The Bears were just too big and too classy for the comets winning 71-36.

Liesl Tesch has not lost touch with the game making a seamless return which included 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists while Mari Amimoto came off the bench to lead all scorers with 25.

The Comets were far from disgraced, keeping touch for the majority of the first half with late points putting the result beyond doubt. Shooting percentage will have to improve if the Comets are to square the ledger tomorrow.

Game 2: Be Active Western Stars v Sydney Uni Flames

The Be Active Western Stars also got their season of to a perfect start with a 57-35 win over the Sydney Uni Flames. Amber Merritt seemed to create her own space and played the game on her terms with 28 points at a very tidy 62%.

The most anticipated WNWBL debut in years went exactly to plan with Deanna Smith showing she’s got plenty to offer the Stars in season 2013 and beyond. Six points at 75% with four rebounds, two steals and a block capped a dream night for the debutant.

The Flames had some success late in the game with their press. Sarah Stewart led the way for the home team with 17 points, but she’ll need more help at the offensive end if the Flames are going to be contenders this year.
