Team Preview: Be Active Western Stars

Forever the Bridesmaid and never the Bride, the team from Perth will be desperate to take that next step in 2013 and claim their first ever championship as the Be Active Western Stars.

The Stars boast the two premier low pointers in Australia in Clare Nott and Sarah Vinci. The two guards pave the way for the almost unstoppable Amber Merritt who holds the past two scoring titles and will have only benefitted from her first Paralympic experience in London.

The three internationals in Nott, Vinci and Merritt form the crux of the Stars line-up but perhaps the most exciting news for the Stars has been the development of Georgia Inglis. Since making her debut in the Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League in 2010, she has gone from strength to strength. Inglis spent some time this past summer with Porto Torres in the Italian Wheelchair Basketball League and has coaches very excited having returned a better and much more confident player.

Amanda Nott continues to develop and the Stars will need her to take another step up this season and really help to take some pressure off Merritt at the offensive end of the floor.

The Stars have made some significant additions to their playing list is 2013. Making the switch from the swimming pool to the basketball court is three time Paralympic swimmer Kat Porter who will be a chance to debut for the Stars in 2013. Mandy Bonavita also makes her return to the WNWBL after a hiatus in 2012. There is also some speculation surrounding another code jumper that could potentially be wearing a Stars jersey this season. These new additions might just be exactly what coach Triscari needs as he seeks that maiden championship with the Be Active Western Stars.

The Stars are still a very young team that have been so close for so many years now. Could 2013 be the year that the Be Active Western Stars finally take that next step and win their maiden WNWBL championship?
