WNWBL Round 3 Wrap-up

Round 3 of the 2011 Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League took place over the weekend with 10 action packed games played at the Sleeman Sports Complex in Brisbane.

The VIC Dandenong Rangers continued their dominance of the competition with yet another unbeaten 4-0 weekend record, taking their season tally to 12 wins, placing them well clear at the top of the WNWBL ladder.

Kathleen O’Kelly Kennedy was outstanding in the Rangers win over the Stacks Goudkamp Bears with 22 points and 9 rebounds, while Cobi Crispin starred against the second placed To Be Active Western Stars, with 24 points and 11 rebounds for the game.

For the third-straight round, the To Be Active Western Stars overcame all opposition except for the Rangers, taking them to a 9-3 record. League leading scorer, Amber Merritt led the way for the Stars on the court, who also took part in the closest game of the round, a three point victory, 56-53, over the Sydney Uni Flames.

The Flames were led in Round 3 by Sarah Stewart, finishing the weekend with a 2-2 record, including their narrow loss to the Stars.

Kylie Gauci was the standout player of the round for the Stacks Goudkamp Bears, who registered just one win for the round.

Despite playing in front of their home crowd the Minecraft Comets could not secure their second win of the season. They came within six points of defeating the Bears, who were led by Kylie Gauci, but 24 points and 15 rebounds from Bridie Kean was not enough to get her side over the line.

The action now shifts to Sydney University for Round 4 of the WNWBL on the weekend of 20-21 August.
